Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (30-7, 9-3 MVC) took the series 2-1 over Southern Illinois (20-17, 4-8 MVC) with a 8-3 win on Sunday afternoon.
Shocker starter Anthony Capra went a season-high 7.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine.
SIU's Bret Maugeri hit his second homerun of the year in the second inning to score the first run of the game.
Andy Dirks drew a one-out walk and Kenny Williams, Jr., delivered his second single through the left side in the third inning. Dirks had a great jump on the hit and motored all the way to third. Williams advanced to second on a stolen base and Conor Gillaspie followed with a single, ripped through the right side, plating two runs. Dusty Coleman came through on a hit and run, reaching with a single and scoring Gillaspie.
Tyler Weber led of the fourth with a single to third base. Tyler Lairson made a great play on a hard bouncing ball, but could not come up with the throw to first. Tyler Hill moved the runner on a sacrifice bunt and Dirks doubled off the left field wall to give WSU a 5-1 lead.
A pair of walks to Dirks and Gillaspie put two speedsters on and a double steal moved the runners to second and third. Coleman used an infield single to bring home Dirks and Bret Bascue scooted one through to left field and extended the lead, 8-1.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Southern Illinois kept the inning alive with a Coleman error at short, putting Chris Murphy aboard. Back-to-back singles byScot Elmendorf and Mark Kelly plated a run before Khol Nanney replaced Capra on the bump. Nanney was a touch off at first, allowing a wild pitch to cross a run, a walk and a single, but finally got Dean Cademartori on strikes to end the inning.
The Salukis had cut the score to 8-3, but Nanney came back in the ninth and sat down three consecutive batters, two on strikeouts.
Wichita State hosts Kansas on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium. The game will be telecast live at 7 p.m. on Kansas Now 22.
