Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State (29-6, 8-2 MVC) got its first shutout of the year with a 10-0 run-rule win over Southern Illinois (19-16, 3-7 MVC).
The Salukis threatened early, getting their lead off hitter all the way to third with a sacrifice bunt and ground ball. Another grounder stranded the runner and brought the Shockers up to bat.
Wichita State jumped on SIU quickly with three consecutive singles from Kenny Williams, Jr., Conor Gillaspie and Ryan Jones. Williams scored on the Jones hit through the right side and a double steal allowed Gillaspie to score from third.
The Shockers used a seven-run third inning to put the run-rule in sight. Andy Dirks was hit by a pitch, but erased on a fielder's choice from Williams. Gillaspie singled deep behind second base and Jones drew a full count walk to load the bases. Dusty Coleman bounced one up the middle for a hit that scored two and advanced to second on the throw. Bret Bascue sent a ball back to the pitcher, and Cody Adams threw home, but not in time as Jones slid across the plate. Tyler Weber took a pitch up the middle for a two run single and advanced to third on a throwing error by first baseman Adam Hills. The WSU catcher took advantage of a wild pitch and crossed home. Tyler Hill, reaching of a fielder's choice, moved into scoring position on the dirt ball. Dirks delivered an RBI single through the left side to cap the inning, giving WSU a 9-0 lead.
Wichita State manufactured their last run with a single from Jones, a wild pitch, stolen base, and RBI ground out by Bascue. SIU reliever Daniel Etienne allowed only that first hit before capturing nine-straight outs, but it was too late as WSU had enough runs for a run-rule.
WSU starter Rob Musgrave (5-1) made sure that score stuck, sitting down the Salukis in order in the top of the seventh, just like the senior left-hander had done in the third and fourth. Musgrave threw the complete seven innings, scattering four hits and no walks, picking up seven strikeouts in the shutout.
Adams fell to 2-3 with eight earned runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings. Etienne allowed one earned run on one hit in three innings.  Dean Cademartori had two of the Salukis' four hits.
The conference series continues Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
