OMAHA, Neb. -- The Wichita State men's and women's tennis team each picked up 7-0 wins over conference rival Creighton Thursday afternoon in Omaha.

The Shocker men drew one step closer to a Missouri Valley Conference Championship with their 7-0 sweep of the Jays. WSU won five of its six singles matches in straight sets, with Albert Ballesta winning the No. 2 match in a third set tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-0) over Creighton's Nikita Dudar.

Tiago Espirito Santo won the No. 1 singles match over Jose Guerra, 6-2, 6-1, while the No. 3 match went to Thiago Dos Santos in a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Joe Eckert. Jonathan Obrist followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Creighton's James McAvoy, while Adrian Chermaci made quick work of Bryan Lube in the No. 5 match, 6-2, 6-0. Matt Teivans blanked Michael Elson in the No. 6 match to complete the Shocker singles sweep.

WSU swept the doubles competition as well. Tiago Espirito Santo and Matt Teivans cruised past Joe Eckert and Nikita Dudar in the No. 1 match, 8-5, while Thiago Dos Santos and Albert Ballesta downed Brian Ward and Jose Guerra 8-6 in the No. 2 match. Kevin Gardner and Jonathan Obrist completed the Shocker doubles sweep with an 8-6 win over Bryan Lube and James McAvoy in the No. 3 match.

WSU Women 7, Creighton 0
The Shocker women, meanwhile, mixed up their lineup as they faced a short-handed Bluejay squad. Florentina Hanisch made an impressive debut at No. 1 singles, downing Creighton's Lindsey Erickson 6-4, 6-2. Anna Egorova followed with a win of her own in the No. 2 match, defeating Lauren Mastro 6-0, 6-3, while Torrie Browning blanked Sarah Cadwallader in the No. 3 single match, 6-0, 6-0. Playing in the No. 4 match for the first time this season, Laryssa Ferreira defeated Leesa Cadwallader 6-3, 6-1.

Olga Elkin and Kari Bosch each picked up their first conference wins of the season. Elkin won the No. 5 match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rachelle Shoji, while Bosch won the No. 6 match by default due to lack of available Creighton players.

In doubles play, Anna Egorova and Laryssa Ferreira played their first doubles match together, and disposed of Creighton's sister-act of Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader in the No. 1 match, 8-3. Torrie Browning and Florentina Hanisch followed with an 8-2 win over Lindsay Erickson and Lauren Mastro in the No. 2 match, while Kari Bosch and Olga Elkin won the No. 3 match by default.

The women are 12-7 on the season and 4-1 in conference play heading into their final two matches of the season this weekend.

The Shocker men travel to undefeated Drake Friday to determine the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Champion. Both teams are undefeated in conference play. The women, meanwhile, return to Wichita for a weekend series that will conclude their regular season against Northern Iowa and Drake. Saturday's 11 a.m. match with Northern Iowa will be "Think Pink" day in honor of breast cancer awareness. The pink t-shirts worn by the Shocker women will be available for sale and may be purchased by making a donation to the Susan Koman foundation. Sunday's season finale with Drake will also begin at 11 a.m.
