TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Wichita State softball team (27-19, 9-8) got a pair of 13-strikeout perfomances from senior
Ashly Bright, but struggled offensively as Indiana State (13-20-1, 4-9) picked up the doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Price Field. The Shockers fell in game one 1-0, before losing on a two-run walkoff home run in the nightcap, 4-3.
The teams will wrap the series up at 11 a.m., CDT tomorrow. Bright struck out 26 batters on the day, including 13 in the first game, followed by 13 more in the nightcap.
Game One: Indiana State 1, Shockers 0Indiana State started the scoring early, as Meredith Simpson led the bottom of the first with a home run to center, giving the Sycamores a 1-0 lead. Leslie Fakes then reached on a three-base error by the Shockers, but starter
Ashly Bright (17-11) finally settled in to retire three-straight to end the first.
Wichita State's first rally of the day came in the fourth after
Britnee Barnett reached on a one-out walk and
Cynthia Verhulst posted WSU's first hit of the day with a single through the right side before turning over base running duties to right fielder
Lindsie Mitts. Freshman
Heather Gerritse advanced the runners with a ground out, but the Shockers could not capitalize as Sycamore starter Katie Armour got
Jamie Hull to ground out, ending the threat with two stranded in scoring position. WSU loaded the bases in the seventh, but a ground out by
Kara L'Huillier ended the game, handing WSU its second shutout in conference play.
Bright retired eight of nine at one point on strikeouts, and finished the day with 13, the first time in conference play the Shockers have lost when the pitching staff records double-digit strikeouts. She took the loss however, as the Shocker offense never got on track, giving up just one run on one hit in the hard-luck loss.
Armour took the win, tossing a complete-game three-hit shutout, the second straight loss for Wichita State by one run. Megan McCurdy picked up the save by pitching the seventh.
Game Two: Indiana State 4, Shockers 3Bright picked up in game two right where she left the first game off, striking out the side in the first and five of the first nine Sycamores she faced in the nightcap.
The Shockers posted its first rally of game two in the third, getting two-out singles by
Katie McGeeney and
Kara L'Huillier before a ground out by Barnett ended the threat. Wichita State scored its first run of the day on a
Cynthia Verhulst home run in the fourth, a shot that traveled deep over the fence in center field, giving WSU a 1-0 lead, its first of the afternoon. Verhulst's blast was her eighth of the season, and the 28th of her career at WSU.
Indiana State's first hit of the second game came with two outs in the fourth as Katie Iocoangeli laced a single to right center, and the Sycamores took the lead one batter later as Katie Armour ripped a pitch from Bright to deep center, bouncing off the top of the center field wall for a two-run home run. Armour's second home run of the season answered Wichita State's run, giving the Sycamores a 2-1 advantage after four.
WSU threatened again in the sixth, putting runners on first and second, but
Jamie Hull went down on strikes, stranding another Shocker in scoring position, and the 13th runner Wichita State left on the bases on the afternoon.
The Shockers regained the lead in the seventh when
Katie McGeeney reached on a one-out single and came home a batter later as
Kara L'Huillier lifted her first home run of the season to left center, giving the Shockers a 3-2 lead.
The lead was short-lived as Indiana State led off its half of the seventh with a single by Katie Armour, who then surrendered base running duties to Kacy Kestner. The Sycamores won it one batter later as Kelsey Anderson took Bright's delivery deep over the right field fence inside the foul pole, giving ISU the doubleheader sweep.
Bright (17-13) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out 13. All five Indiana State runs on the afternoon came via the long ball against the Oklahoma City native. Megan McCurdy (7-9) picked up the win for the Sycamores, giving up three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out eight.
