STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Wichita State softball team (27-17) scored the game's first run in the top of the eighth, but Oklahoma State (20-18) rallied to win it in the bottom of the frame with a two-out double by Kim Kaye, giving the Cowgirls a 2-1 win Thursday evening at Cowgirl Stadium.
On a night with winds blowing out to center in excess of 40 miles per hour, Oklahoma State started things early with back-to-back one-out singles in the first, but WSU starter
Ashly Bright (17-11) settled in and got the final two outs to retire the threat and the first.
Bright and the Shockers dodged trouble in the fifth on a pair of defensive gems by sophomore
Lindsie Mitts, first when Cowgirl catcher Ashley Boyd led the inning off with a single through the right side, but was caught by Mitts at second trying to stretch the base hit into extra bases. Mitts ended the inning with Breana Casaus stranded at second after Mitts ran down a fly foul ball to right to end the inning and the threat with no harm done.
WSU's first rally of the night came in the sixth with a pair of leadoff singles by
Kara L'Huillier and
Britnee Barnett, but the opportunity was wasted as Cowgirl starter Anna Whiddon (8-4) retired three-straight to strand two, ending the inning and Wichita State's first real threat of the night.
The Shockers broke the scoreless tie in the eigth when L'Huillier led the inning off with a walk and came around to score on a
Heather Gerritse single that glanced off Whiddon and rolled into left field giving WSU a 1-0 lead.
A two-out double by Katelyn Bright in the bottom of the eighth gave the Cowgirls an opportunity, and after Alysia Hamilton reached on a Shocker error OSU's top power threat came to the plate in Kim Kaye. The senior delivered for OSU, ripping a double to right center to score both Bright and Hamilton to give the Cowgirls the 2-1 win.
Bright took the loss for the Shockers, giving up two unearned runs on eight hits. The senior walked one and struck out five on the night. Whiddon picked up the win working the complete-game five-hitter, walking five and striking out eight.
WSU in next in action this weekend when the Shockers return to conference play at Indiana State.
