WICHITA -- Wichita State (16-8) closed out the 2008 Shocker Invitational with a 7-0 win over UMKC (2-10) on Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

Freshman Brianna Smet (7-0) tossed a gem with the two-hit shutout, walking none and striking out five in her second complete-game effort of the season. Taya Upkes (2-4) picked up the loss for the Kangaroos, giving up three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out none.

Jamie Hull went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Katie McGeeney and Heather Gerritse each recorded two hits in the nightcap.

The Shockers shook off their earlier woes in the day in a big way, as a two-run homer by Cynthia Verhulst gave WSU a quick 2-0 lead against the Kangaroos.

UMKC threatend in the second, putting a pair of runners in scoring position before starter Brianna Smet got a strikeout and a ground out to end the inning. WSU tacked on when Jamie Stanclift slapped a single through the right side to bring home Britnee Barnett, who reached earlier in the inning on a Kangaroo error. Stanclift's second RBI of the tournament gave the Shockers a 3-0 lead after three.

WSU tacked on another in the sixth when Katie McGeeney singled home Kiersten Dixon after UMKC center fielder Ashley Whiteside fumbled the ball allowing Dixon to score from first to give the Shockers the 4-0 win.

The Shockers scored three more runs in the top of the seventh on a pair of doubles by Tiffany Dahlquist and Jamie Hull, coupled with a Kiersten Dixon single that gave the Shockers the 7-0 win.
