Shocks Put SDSU on Ice, 5-3

3/7/2008 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA -- Wichita State (14-7) got a solid pitching performance from freshman Brianna Smet and timely hitting to turn back South Dakota State (4-10), 5-3, on a cold Friday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium in the second game of the 2008 Shocker Invitational.

South Dakota State struck quickly, after Shocker starter Brianna Smet issued a walk that came back to haunt her when Stacey Evans doubled off the right field wall to score Jessica Vinyard, giving the Jackrabbits the 1-0 lead before WSU came to bat for the first time.

The Shockers wasted no time answering, as a Britnee Barnett single to left scored Katie McGeeney to tie the game in the bottom of the first, 1-1. A pair of SDSU errors allowed the Shockers to load the bases for junior Jamie Stanclift who delivered, bringing home Barntett to give the Shockers a 2-1. Sophomore Lauren Coleman then singled through the left side to bring around pinch-runner Caley Roberts to give the Shockers a 3-1 lead. Freshman Heather Gerritse then then tacked on the final run of the inning, scoring on an illegal pitch by South Dakota State starter Jenna Marston (4-9), who took the loss, working all six innings giving up five runs on four hits while walking and striking out four.

WSU scored again in the second after the third Jackrabbit error of the afternoon, which allowed McGeeney to reach and later come around to score on a passed ball by SDSU catcher Dani Broshar, extending the Shocker lead to 5-1 after two.

SDSU responded with a run in the top of the third on a Shocker error, and added another on an RBI single by Kiley Schwedhelm in the sixth to cut the Shocker lead to 5-3. The Shocker bats were as cold as the temperatures outside, posting just four hits on the afternoon, but the five runs were enough for WSU's Brianna Smet (5-0), who never allowed the Jackrabbits to rally for more than one run in an inning. Smet worked 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out five. Ashly Bright came in to work the final two outs to pick up her fourth save of the season.

Wichita State returns to action in the Shocker Invitational tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., against Iowa State.
