Shocks Squeeze Past Bears, 1-0

WICHITA -- Wichita State (23-12, 5-2) used a seventh-inning squeeze play to break a scoreless tie and slip past Missouri State (14-6, 3-3), 1-0, Tuesday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

Ashly Bright won the duel of Valley Pitchers of the Week, tossing a one-hit shutout of the Bears. Bright walked two and struck out 13 on the afternoon.

Cynthia Verhulst posted the first hit of the game with an infield single to MSU's Jenna Schwark, but a failed sacrifice attempt resulted in a double play, ending the Shockers' first threat of the afternoon in the second.

WSU put the first runner of the afternoon in scoring position for either team in the bottom of the fifth after Heather Gerritse was hit by a pitch and turned over base running duties to freshman Brianna Smet. Smet went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Hull before pinch-hitter Jessica Spencer drew a two-out walk, but Porche struck out freshman Kiersten Dixon on a riseball tp end the threat.

Missouri State put its first runner in scoring position after Jessie Smith walked and stole second, but Bright answered Porche's strikeout with one of her own to end the Bears' threat in the top of the seventh.

The bottom of the seventh was full of dramatics as Verhulst put up the Shockers' second hit of the day down the right line before turning over running once again, this time to sophomore Lindsie Mitts. Mitts then stole second on a close throw by Bears' catcher Jen Carr, and advanced to third on a sacrifice by freshman Heather Gerritse, bringing Saturday's hero Jamie Hull to the plate. Hull provided the winning run in the finale against Southern Illinois with a home run, but reversed the trend on a 2-0 pitch from Porche, laying down a well-executed squeeze bunt that brought home Mitts to give the Shockers the win.

Porche took the hard-luck loss for the Bears, giving up three hits and just one run to move to 8-4 on the season. Porche struck out five and walked two. WSU returns to action on Saturday when the Shockers travel to Evansville, Ind., for a series with Evansville.
