#47 Women's Tennis Defeats Middle Tennessee, 6-1

WICHITA, Kan. ? Ranked #47 in the nation, the Wichita State women's tennis team dispatched Middle Tennessee, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Genesis Health Club. With the win, the Shockers remain undefeated when playing in Wichita.

Wichita State took the early advantage, winning the tightly-contested doubles point by taking two of three doubles matches from the Blue Raiders. WSU's wins came from Stephanie Dalmacio and Laryssa Ferreira, who won the No. 1 match with a 9-8 (7-1) win over MTSU's Marlene Chemin/Elvira Yusupova, and the 60th-ranked team of Anna Egorova and Lenore Lazaroiu, who defeated Ann-Kristin Siljestrom and Claudia Szabo 8-5 in the No. 2 match.

MTSU's No. 3 team of Stephanie Parkison and Shannon Hartmann took the final doubles match with a 9-8 (7-5) win over WSU's Florentina Hanisch and Torrie Browning.

In singles play, the Shockers went 5-1, with their lone loss coming as Torrie Browning retired in the No. 5 match against MTSU's Claudia Szabo due to injury.

Anna Egorova notched the Shockers first win in a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Stephanie Parkison in the No 2 match. Laryssa Ferreira followed in the No. 6 match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Andrea Herrera, while Florentina Hanisch recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win over Marlene Chemin at the No. 3 spot to secure the Shocker win.

Stephanie Dalmacio added an insurance point in the No. 1 match, rallying for a 5-7, 6-2, 12-10 tie break victory over MTSU's Ann-Kristin Siljestrom.

“I'm very proud of the way our girls competed today against MTSU,” said Associate Head Coach Jennifer Magley. “MTSU came out on fire and were very vocal, but I thought we were able to stick to our strategy and ultimately follow our two rules: try hard and have fun. It was great to see Stephanie come through big in that tiebreaker match.”

With the win, WSU improves to 2-3 on the season, while the Blue Raiders fall to 3-9 this spring. The Shockers are back in action Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against No. 38 Tulsa. The match will take place at Genesis Health Club on Rock Road.
