COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Wichita State men's tennis team concluded a weekend sweep in Colorado Springs with a 5-0 win over the University of Idaho Saturday inside Cadet Gymnasium at the United States Air Force Academy. The weekend concludes a three-match sweep in which the Shockers won every singles match they played. Because of time constraints, matches in progress after the match was decided were not finished.
Wichita State opened play by taking two doubles matches from the Vandals to earn the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, Tiago Espirito Santo and Jonathan Obrist defeated Idaho's Paulo Miranda and Stanislav Glukhov, 8-4, while the Shocker tandem of Albert Ballesta and Thiago Dos Santos took an 8-5 decision from Idaho's Robert Chalkley and Tim Huynh. The No. 3 match was not finished.
In singles play, Tiago Espirito Santo downed Idaho's Stanislav Gluhkov in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to secure the No. 1 point, while Albert Ballesta used three sets to dispatch of Tim Huynh, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. In the final two singles matches that were finished, Thiago Dos Santos cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Idaho's Robert Chalkley in the No. 3 match, while Jonathan Obrist downed Andrew Dobbs, 6-4, 6-4 to win the No. 4 point, and secure the win for the Shockers.
The No. 5 and No. 6 matches were not finished.
With the win, the Shockers improve to 5-1 on the season. They will take the court once again on Saturday, Mar. 8 when they head to the Lone Star State for a 1 p.m. match with the University of Texas at Arlington.
