ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The Wichita State (5-5) softball team opened play at the Lobo Invitational Friday morning with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Missouri (7-4).
The Tigers got on the board in the first inning after leadoff batter Rhea Taylor singled and eventually scored on an error. MU tacked on another run in the sixth when Kathryn Poet reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on another Shocker error.
The Shockers threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Barnett and Cynthia Verhulst hit back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Heather Gerritse moved both runners into scoring position, but WSU was unable to capitalize.
Senior Britnee Barnett led the Shocker offense going 2-for-3. Senior Ashly Bright took the loss despite striking out 11 and surrenduring four hits while walking just two in seven innings of work.
WSU will play host New Mexico at 4 p.m. today.
