Shockers Fall in Finale, 77-64

9/2/2007 1:00:00 AM

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Wichita State women's basketball team completed its Labor Day exhibition tour of Western Canada with a 77-64 loss to University of British Columbia. WSU went 1-2 on the weekend, dropping both contests on Sunday in a difficult doubleheader.

Kiki Stephens led the Shockers with 10 points, going 6-for-6 at the stripe. Jacie Hoyt, Shantel Pointer, Jadhon Kerr and Samantha Smith each added eight. Stephens led the club with five rebounds.

WSU's defense gave up the most points of the trip, but did force 26 turnovers, and limited UBC's three-point attack to just a 4-for-16 effort from the floor. UBC outrebounded the Shockers 42-33. WSU was 22-for-27 (.815) at the free throw line.

UBC scored the first six points of the game en-route to a 16-3 run to open the game. Samatha Smith's layin with just over four minutes left in the first ended a two-minute drought for the Shockers that allowed the Thunderbirds to break out on an 8-0 run. Smith's three-point play brought the Shockers to within 10, but the Thunderbirds' transition offense was too much, helping UBC run out to 25-8 lead by the end of the first.

The Shockers opened the second on a 7-4 run to pull within 14 by the 7:00 mark. A pair of three-pointers from Shantel Pointer cut into the Thunderbird lead even further, bringing the Shockers to within 31-18 with just over five minutes left in the half.

A pair of free throws from freshman Jennifer DeGarmo cut the lead to 11 with 2:30 left in the second, but a Erica McGuinness layin with :06 seconds left gave UBC the 39-26 lead at the break.

The Thunderbirds shot a scorching 50 percent from the field in the first half, while holding the Shockers to a 30 percent effort from the floor. Pointer's two three-pointers led the Shockers at the break with six points, while Kiki Stephens picked up two early fouls and had to sit much of the first half, clearing the way for Smith and Kerr to gain valuable playing time in the post.

McGuinness' second three-pointer of the night three seconds into the third gave UBC a 42-26 advantage, sparking an 8-2 run by UBC coming out of the half.

WSU could not cut the lead to single digits in the second half. The Shockers return to the floor on Nov. 1, for the annual exhibition game against the Oklahoma Flyers.
