WICHITA - Fifth-year head coach Jane Albright has announced the addition of Plano (Texas) High School guard Shantel Pointer to the Wichita State women's basketball team for the 2007-08 season.

"Shantel is an athletic guard who is very skilled," Albright said. "Her enthusiasm for the game of basketball and life is very contagious. She has competed with great teams and was a great contributer to her high school team's success. We expect her to make an immediate impact with our team both on and off the court."

Pointer was the team's leading scorer in each of her final three seasons in Plano under the guidance of head coach Lynn Meger. A four-year varsity letterwinner, Pointer was a four-time all-District 9-5A selection, and was named team captain her final three years at Plano.

She helped lead her AAU team to a fifth-place finish at the national tournament in 2004, and was named a Basketball Congress International All-American after leading her squad to the 2005 BCI championship.

She was ranked as the No. 21 senior women's basketball player in the state of Texas by TexasHoops.com, and was a McDonald's All-American nominee. The 5-10 guard averaged nearly 14 points as a senior, which ranked among the top 30 in the Dallas Metro area. and six rebounds per game in her high school career.

A member of the National Honor Society and a Honor Roll student at PHS, Pointer graduated with a 3.6 GPA.

Pointer and the rest of the 2007-08 Shockers open practice for their Labor Day exhibition tour in Canada on Saturday.
