WICHITA - Wichita State (33-27) and Kansas (33-20-1) battled the elements as well as each other but it was the Shockers who got the upper hand as WSU swept the Jayhawks in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday night at Wilkins Stadium. The Shockers took game one on the strength of Margo Pruis' one-hit shutout, while the WSU bats came alive in game two to come from behind for the 6-4 win.
KU was receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll.
Kansas posed the first threat in the top of the third of game one when leadoff hitter Dougie McCaulley slapped a single to center field, giving the Jayhawks their first hit of the afternoon. Nicole Washburn then put down the sacrifice bunt, but starter Margo Pruis fielded it cleanly, throwing to Britnee Barnett in time for Barnett's relay to get Washburn at first, as the Shockers turned the double play on the sacrifice attempt, ending KU's first threat of the game.
Kassie Humphreys (18-12) kept the Shockers guessing early, striking out half of the first 10 hitters she faced, four of them coming on called third strikes. Margo Pruis (21-11) was just as efficient, allowing just one hit through the first four innings while striking out seven.
WSU's first hit of the day was a big one, as Barnett homered to right field in the fourth to give the Shockers their first hit and first run of the day. Barnett's ninth homer of the season gave the Shockers a 1-0 lead.
KU threatened again in the sixth after Stevie Crisosto was hit by a pitch and Elle Pottorf drew a walk to give the Jayhawks two runners on with one out. Pruis then got Humphreys to fly out and Sara Ramirez went down on strikes as Pruis ended the threat and the inning unscathed.
Barnett's home run was all the offense Pruis needed, as the senior threw the complete-game shutout in her final start at Wilkins Stadium, giving up just one hit, while walking four and striking out 10. Humphreys took the hard-luck loss, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out 10 in the losing effort.
Erin Peters and Lindsie Mitts registered the Shockers' other two hits in the first game.
The Shockers struck first again in game two, when Ashly Bright led the second off with a single to center, and was driven in by Stephanie De La Riva's one-out single, her 19th RBI of the season that gave the Shockers a 1-0 lead.
Kansas quickly answered, and did so in a big way as the Jayhawks hit Bright (9-10), the Shocker starter, hard in the third as an Amanda Jobe homer capped a four run inning to give KU a 4-1 lead after three.
Bright avenged the four-spot with a three-run shot of her own, her fourth of the season, in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 4-4.
KU starter Valerie George turned over pitching duties to Humphreys in the fifth after George gave up a leadoff double to Brooke Usher. Humphreys did her job to get out of the jam, striking out three-straight hitters to end the Shockers' threat in the fifth.
Cynthia Verhulst's 13th home run of the year, a towering two-run shot, gave the Shockers a 6-4 lead, after Erin Peters led the inning off with a single through the left side. It was a landmark blast for the junior, as she tied Ashley Lynn's single-season record, one the former Shocker set with 13 home runs in 2004.
Verhulst's homer was all the offense Bright needed to secure the win, as she retired the side in the seventh to give the Shockers the sweep. Bright was solid in the circle again, working all seven innings by giving up four runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out four. Humphreys (18-13) took the loss for the Jayhawks, giving up two runs on two hits in the final two innings of work.
WSU travels to take on nationally-ranked Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill., this weekend in the regular-season finale.
