Softball Falls at Creighton

3/25/2007 5:00:00 PM

OMAHA, Neb. - The Wichita State softball team (16-21, 4-4) lost a late-inning lead for a second time in as many days, as TJ Eadus' grand slam in the fifth broke open a pitcher's duel and fueled Creighton (22-6, 6-0) to a 5-1 win over the Shockers Sunday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex in Omaha.

The Shockers left a runner in scoring position in the second but Creighton could not mount much on offense either, stranding runners in each the first and the second.

WSU opened the scoring in the fourth when Brooke Usher reached on an infield single and got to second on an error by Bluejay second baseman Michelle Koch. Usher got to third on a grounder by Britnee Barnett. A Cynthia Verhulst single through the right side brought Usher home, giving the Shockers a 1-0 lead. Creighton starter Tara Oltman was able to end the rally a batter later as she got Stephanie De La Riva to fly out to right and Lau Emmsley-Chang doubled Verhulst off first to end the top of the fourth.

CU got its first hit off Shocker starter Margo Pruis in the fourth when TJ Eadus ripped a ball through the left side, giving the Bluejays a baserunner with one out. Pruis ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts, sending the game to the fith.

Creighton blew the game open in the fifth after Pruis hit Michelle Graner with the bases loaded to tie the game and Eadus took a Pruis offering deep over the fence in dead center, giving CU a 5-1 win and the series sweep over the Shockers.

Pruis (9-9) gave up just three hits on the day, but walked two and hit two with three of those baserunners coming in the costly fifth.

Oltman (13-3) was efficient for the Bluejays, allowing just two hits while striking out five.

WSU is next in action at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at Oklahoma State.
