Softball Drops Oklahoma State, 4-1

3/14/2007 1:00:00 AM

Wichita State (12-17) used a two-run homer by senior Lisa Jones to jump on Oklahoma State (15-16) early, and Margo Pruis' gem gave the Shockers plenty of room to breathe as WSU knocked off the Cowgirls, 4-1, Wednesday evening at Wilkins Stadium.

Pruis (6-7) shined, allowing just two hits on the night, while walking four and striking out nine. She gave up one unearned run, and was able to keep the Cowgirls' offense guessing, as OSU stranded seven runners on the night.

Jessica Hoppock (9-9) took the loss for the Cowgirls, allowing four earned runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out four.

Jones' leadoff homer in the bottom of the third got things started for the Shockers, as the senior took her first ball out of the park this season to give WSU a 1-0 lead. Elissa Zeches then drew a walk and later came around to score on a Barnett fly ball to center, giving the Shockers a 2-0 lead after three.

OSU left a runner on in three of the first five frames before the Shockers added two more in the bottom of the fifth. Brooke Usher laced a one-out single throught the right side and came around to score on a Cynthia Verhulst single down the right line that was nearly snagged by Cowgirl first baseman Kim Kaye, but the ball glanced off the top of Kaye's outstretched glove for the hit which gave WSU a 3-0 lead. Britnee Barnett followed the single up with a walk, and she scored later on an Erin Peters ground ball to cap the scoring for the Shockers by giving Wichita State a 4-0 lead.

Oklahoma State responded in the sixth, as Shanel Scott drew a leadoff walk and got to third on a Shocker error before being driven in by Kaye on a sacrifice fly to center, giving OSU its first and only run of the day, 4-1.

WSU left two on in the sixth before Pruis had to work out of a bases-loaded jame in the seventh, but the senior picked up her 60th career victory by getting leftfielder Katelyn Bright to pop out to Usher.

The Shockers outhit the Cowgirls 5-2, and picked up just their fourth win in the all-time series that OSU now leads 65-4.

Conference play begins on Saturday for the Shockers, as WSU plays host to Drake this weekend at Wilkins Stadium. The teams are set for a Noon doubleheader on Saturday before a single game at Noon on Sunday closes the three-game set.
