WICHITA- The Wichita State women's basketball team (5-6) used yet another comeback to move to 5-0 at home this season as the Shockers slipped past Texas State (5-6), 80-77, in front of 10,103 inside Charles Koch Arena on School House Rocks with the Shocks Day on Tuesday afternoon, the third-largest crowd in both Wichita State and Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball history.
Jacie Hoyt led the Shockers with a career-high 15 points and a career-best seven assists, one of four WSU players in double figures on the afternoon.
Kyrie Kinder (13 points),
Kiki Stephens (14 points) and
Marcy Sudbeck (10 points), all helped lead the Shockers to their first 70-point performance of the season.
Joyce Ekworomadu led four Texas State players in double figures with 18 points, while Ashley Cole, Aimee Hilburn and Marie Moser all joined her with double-digit scoring efforts on the afternoon.
The Bobcats opened the game on a 12-4 run over the first four minutes, using steals and transition buckets to open out to an early eight-point lead following an Aimee Hilburn three-pointer with 16 minutes left in the first.
The deficit extended to as many as 10 before a Sudbeck putback with 13:44 left brought the Shockers to within six at 16-10, sparking a 9-4 run over the next two-plus minutes that was capped with a Whitney Rice 3-pointer with 11:45 left in the half. Rice's trey cut the deficit to just five, but Texas State continued to have an answer as Hilburn connected on a jumper with 11:21 left to push the Bobcats back out to a seven-point advantage.
Five-straight points from
Jennifer DeGarmo sparked an 8-0 run capped by a Hoyt 3-pointer with 8:54 left in the first that brought the Shockers to within one, 24-23.
The Shockers could never take the lead over the final nine minutes, as Texas State outscored WSU 18-14 to take a 42-34 lead into the break. WSU shot 42 percent from the field in the first half, but allowed Texas State to shoot nearly 43 percent, and sent the Bobcats to the line for nine first half points.
WSU opened the second half on a 12-5 run, but Texas State responded with a 10-4 run of its own capped by a Chika Ofoegbu layin with 12:26 left that extended the Bobcat lead to 57-48. An Ekworomadu layin with 11:16 left gave the Bobcats a 59-48 edge, their largest of the game to that point, but the Shockers answered with a 7-0 run capped by a
Kyrie Kinder three-point play that trimmed the deficit to just 59-55 with 9:25 left to play.
Samantha Smith's transition layin with 7:20 left cut the Texas State lead to just two, but the Shockers couldn't get any closer until a pair of
Alex Bunton free throws brought WSU to within one, 69-68 with 4:25 left to play. Stephens' jumper with 3:47 left gave the Shockers their first lead since the 19:34 mark of the first half, 70-69, and WSU never looked back, connecting on six of the final eight free throw attempts over the final 3:30 to seal the victory.
WSU is next in action at 7 p.m., Thursday, in Charles Koch Arena against Winthrop. The game will be broadcast live on Kansas Now 22 with Bruce Haertl and former All-American Jackie Stiles calling the action.
