Shocks Sweep Syracuse

WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State won the 2006 Best Western Volleyball Classic with a sweep of Syracuse. The Shockers won by scores of 30-15, 30-14 and 30-20. Tournament MVP Sara Lungren led the Shockers with 19 kills and a career-high 17 digs. The 19 kills tied her career-high.

Abby Harsh had a match-high 36 assists and was also named to the all-tournament team along with Melissa Granville.

The Shockers raced out to a 10-1 lead in game one behind the serving of Kelly Broussard who had three aces in that span. Syracuse would answer with two points before WSU scored six-straight for a 16-3 lead. SU scored four-straight points to pull within 23-13, but the Shockers responded with a 7-2 run to take game one 30-15.

SU started game two strong grabbing a 6-3 lead off a kill from Cheryl Cobbina. The Shockers responded with a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead. The Shockers increased the lead to 18-10 on back-to-back service aces by Stephanie Tokarz and won game two 30-14 on a hitting error by the Orange.

Tokarz served the Shockers to a 5-2 lead in game three. WSU kept the pressure on as kills by Lungren and Tokarz increased the lead to 21-13. The Shockers won the game 30-20 on another kill from Tokarz.
