The Wichita State Shockers had great start to their tennis season with some very competitive matches this weekend.

Director of Tennis Chris Young was very excited to play at the Indoor Regional Championship in Tulsa, Ok. "These events help us elevate the status of the program and allow us to compete against quality opponents. With each match we play," Chris said, "we are showing an ability to compete with the top teams in our region."

The Shockers got off to a rough start in doubles playing Arkansas who, 2 years ago were in the Sweet 16, and these teams are just as good. In Singles, the Shockers competed extremely well.

"I am proud of our effort and the willingness to fight regardless of the score. We had several players who got their season off to a great start on an individual level."

Boris Gubic, a junior, lost a tough first set but was leading 5-2 in the second set against the 19th ranked player in the country, when the match was stopped. Tiago Espirito Santo, a sophomore, also was having a great battle with Matt Roberts (24th in the nation), when his match was ended.

"We play Arkansas again in just a few weeks, so will be looking forward to that challenge," says Chris Young.
