Shockers Fall to ORU, 71-55

12/5/2006 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan.- Oral Roberts' (6-2) aggressive half-court defense limited Wichita State's (2-4) high-power three-point attack to just 18 percent as the Golden Eagles raced past the Shockers, 71-55, Wednesday evening inside Charles Koch Arena.

ORU's Elisha Turek led all scorers with 21 points, while Jenny Hardin posted a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mariana Camargo chipped in 14 points and added a game-high six assists for the Golden Eagles in the winning effort.

WSU's Antionette Wells nearly notched her own double-double, scoring a team-high 19 points and pulling down a Shocker-best nine boards. Kiki Stephens was the only other Shocker in double-figures with 11 points. Taylor Steven recorded five assists for the second-straight game, while freshman Breezy Martin saw her first playing time of the season.

The Shockers shot below 40 percent (38.8) for the first time this season, while Oral Roberts shot a feverish 50 percent from the floor thanks to numerous layups and 28 second half points in the paint. Neither team shot well beyond the arc as the Golden Eagles limited WSU to a season-low three three-pointers, but were unable to sink many of their own, going 1-for-9 from long range. WSU outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 38-31.

The Shockers opened the game on a 5-2 run over the first five-plus minutes, thanks to a McDonnell three-pointer and a basket by Stephens and three blocks by the Shocker defense in the early going. The Golden Eagles then proceeded to go on an 8-0 run, capped by a Hardin jumper with 13:27 left, forcing the Shockers to use their first timeout.

An old-fashioned three-point play from Stephens with 11:22 left in the first half ended a three-minute drought from the field for the Shockers, and cut the ORU lead to 13-8. A mini 4-0 Shocker run cut the ORU lead to just one, 17-16, following an 18-footer from Steven, but the Golden Eagles quickly responded with a basket by Carol Volpato to end the run and push the ORU lead back out to 19-16.

ORU stretched the lead out to as many as 13 points, 29-16, following a 12-0 run capped by a pair of Katie Langford free throws with 3:33 left in the half. Wells broke another Shocker shooting drought, this time a five-plus minute stretch without a basket, on a layin with 2:14 left that cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 32-19.

WSU closed the lead to 32-22 on three-straight points by Wells down the stretch but Alycia Seay connected on a layin with :02 seconds left to fashion the halftime score of 34-22. The Shockers shot just 35 percent from the field in the first half, while ORU was 14-for-28 from the field. The Golden Eagles were 0-for-3 from three-point range, but limited WSU's hot shooting guards to just 12.5 percent from long-range in the first frame.

WSU opened the second half on a 9-2 run capped by a Steven three-pointer with 16:35 left that cut ORU's lead to 36-31. The Golden Eagles responded with back-to-back layins by Voelker and Hardin to push the lead back out to 40-31 with 15:50 left in the second half.

A pair of Wells free throws with 14:42 left cut the ORU lead to 41-35, but the Golden Eagles once again had an answer, this time in the form of a Rachel Watman three-pointer that pushed ORU back out to a 44-35 lead.

Three-consecutive baskets and a free throw by Turek helped stretch the Golden Eagles to their largest lead at 53-36, with just under 13 minutes remaining in the second half.

WSU used an 11-4 run to close the lead to just 10 points, 57-47, with 7:29 left in the game, but 10 points was as close as the Shockers would come down the stretch, as ORU brought the game to a halt with lengthy possessions and extended its lead to as many as 18 before a Sudbeck basket with :18 seconds left set the final score, 71-55.

Wichita State is next in action at 7 p.m., Fri., Dec. 8 against Prairie View A&M.
