Shockers Rally Past North Texas, 60-55, on Senior Night

WICHITA, Kan. – A fourth-quarter surge lifted Wichita State to a 60-55 win over North Texas Tuesday night inside Charles Koch Arena on senior night.

The Shockers (8-22, 5-12 American) sent their nine seniors out in style, taking the lead in the final five minutes and holding on to win their home finale.

Wichita State outscored North Texas (17-13, 11-7 American) 37-27 over the final 20 minutes, including a 19-13 advantage in the fourth quarter to erase an early double figure deficit and secure the five-point victory.

Abby Cater led Wichita State with 20 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in three games, shooting 10-for-12 from the free throw line, and added three assists and three steals. Treasure Thompson added 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks, while Taya Davis finished with five points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists, her 12th game this season with five or more assists. Jaila Harding chipped in eight points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to raise her program record for single-season threes to 80.

North Texas opened the game on a 10-0 run, building an 11-point lead early in the first quarter, but the Shockers hung around, using a 6-0 run with buckets from Thompson, Diamond Richardson and Karys Washington to cut the deficit to five at half.

The Shockers chipped away in the third, using an 18-point frame to pull within one multiple times. Harding hit two threes and Cater scored seven points in the effort.

Down one going into the fourth, the Shockers needed to make a push. Two minutes into the period, Harding tied the game at 45-45, hitting a pullup jumper, but the Mean Green responded to stay in front. Cater tied it again, but North Texas went up four before Cater made it a two-point game again, and Bre'Yon White hit a clutch three to give the Shockers their first lead of the game. White scored again two possessions later, and Jaida McDonald blocked a shot and made a layup on the other end to make it a five-point Shocker advantage. North Texas brought it within one again with 39 seconds remaining, but Cater made a crunch time layup with 21 seconds left and hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds on the clock as the Shockers made key stops to secure the win.

The Shockers shot 66.7 percent (8-for-12) in the final period and held North Texas to 13 points in the quarter to seal the comeback.

North Texas was led by Aysia Proctor's 19 points, while Megan Nestor added 15 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, breaking the American Conference's single season rebounds record in the effort.

Wichita State finished the night shooting 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the floor and 80.0 percent (16-of-20) from the free throw line, including several key makes down the stretch.

The Shockers conclude their season on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Memphis.
