WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State scored 14 unanswered runs and rode a strong start from
Johnny Nuanez to a 14-1 victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday evening at Eck Stadium.
The game was halted after the top of the seventh inning due to the ten-rule rule.
For the second straight game, Northern Colorado (0-2) struck in the top of the first inning, this time courtesy of a two-out, run-scoring single from Logan Pruski that staked the Bears to a 1-0 lead. It was all Shockers from that point on, however, as Wichita State (2-0) poured in three runs in the third, six in the fourth and five more in the fifth.
Jayson Jones put WSU in front with a two-run single in the third, then came around to score later in the inning when
Owen Washburn lifted a sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead.
Alex Ulloa opened the fourth inning barrage with an RBI double and Jones followed by a line drive two-run blast to left-center, extending the cushion to 6-1.
MJ Sweeney made it back-to-back jacks when he hooked a towering drive down the right field line;
Max Kaufer and
Jack Quick capped the inning with RBI singles for a 9-1 advantage. In the fifth, Sweeney and Washburn both plated runs with doubles ahead of sacrifice flies from Kaufer and Quick for the game's final runs.
That was more than enough support for Nuanez (1-0), who survived the bumpy first inning to spin 5.0 innings of two-hit ball. The righty struck out five and walked one, conceding two hits and no earned runs. Reliever
Brady Owens struck out five over 2.0 scoreless frames to nail down the win.
Northern Colorado starter Reece Wagner (0-1) gave up just one hit in 3.1 innings, but handed out five walks and hit two batters in taking the loss. He allowed three runs, two earned and struck out two.
The Shockers finished with 11 hits, led by two apiece from Ulloa, Jones, Sweeney and Washburn.
Wichita State concludes the series with a Sunday doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:05 am CT.
