WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State picked up another run-rule victory on their way to a doubleheader sweep over Northern Colorado, taking both games of Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 11-0 and 7-3.
The Shockers improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2018 club began the season 8-0.
Game One
Wichita State scored 10 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to blow open a close game, routing the Bears 11-0 in a game shortened to seven innings by the ten-run rule.
The 10-run frame was the first inning with double-digit runs since the Shockers scored 10 against Western Illinois on March 17, 2015.
Jayson Jones launched a three-run homer to start the scoring, then with two outs nine consecutive Shockers reached base to balloon the lead.
Nolan Ganter made it 5-0 with an RBI single,
Zeb Henry ripped a two-run double,
Alex Ulloa tripled home two more, Jones singled him home, and finally
Josh Wulfert worked a bases-loaded walk to cap off the monster inning.
The combination of
Reese Kortum (1-0) and
Matthew Cuccias produced the shutout, as Kortum worked the first 4.0 frames and Cuccias picked up the save by retiring all nine hitters he faced over the final 3.0 innings. The duo combined for nine strikeouts and issued just two walks, allowing four hits.
Jones went 3-for-4 to lead the Shockers offensively, with Ulloa and Ganter adding two-hit games in support.
Game Two
The Shockers broke a 3-3 tie on a clutch two-out, two-run double from
Kaleb Duncan and rode excellent relief pitching to a 7-3 win in a game that was shortened to seven innings to accommodate Northern Colorado's travel schedule.
Jones homered again in the bottom of the first inning, becoming the first Shocker since Alec Bohm in 2018 to homer in four consecutive games. That staked WSU to an early 2-1 lead, but the Bears battled back thanks to a two-out, two-run single from Zeke Minic that tied the game at 3-3.
Duncan's big hit came in the bottom of the third, then the Shockers later added run-scoring singles from
Jaden Gustafson and
MJ Sweeney to produce the final margin.
Caleb Reed (1-0),
Ethan Rogers,
Amar Tsengeg and
Karsen Richard held Northern Colorado to two hits and no runs over the final 4.1 innings, striking out six along the way. Reed earned the win with 2.1 shutout frames.
The Shockers are back in action on the road at Hawaii for the only non-conference road series of the 2026 season beginning on Thursday, February 19 in Honolulu. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 10:35 pm CT.Â
