BOISE, Idaho – Wichita State's second-half surge nearly erased a 15-point deficit, but the Shockers came up one possession short Tuesday night, falling 62-59 to Boise State at ExtraMile Arena.
Wichita State (3-1) held Boise State without a field goal for the final 3:13, trimming the margin to three twice in the closing seconds, but couldn't come up with the equalizer. After two Boise State missed free throws with 6.4 seconds left, the Shockers generated a clean look at the horn, but
Michael Gray Jr.'s contested right-wing three bounced off the rim as time expired.
Trailing 50-35 with 12:20 to play, Wichita State mounted its best run of the night—an 8–0 burst sparked by a pull-up three from Gray.
Kenyon Giles added back-to-back buckets in transition to pull the Shockers within 52-48 at the 7:31 mark.
Boise State rebuilt a double-digit margin at 60–50 with just over three minutes remaining, but the Shockers answered again. Giles drilled a jumper,
Will Berg scored on a second-chance layup with 34 seconds left, and Kindell converted a fast-break layup with 10 seconds remaining to bring WSU within 62-59.
Giles led Wichita State with 15 points, adding two assists and a steal while going a perfect 3-for-3 at the line in the final minute. Gray contributed 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, while
Emmanuel Okorafor delivered 8 points and 7 boards off the bench.
The Shockers opened with early momentum, sprinting to a 7–0 lead behind a fast-break layup from
Dre Kindell and a Giles three. Boise State responded with a pair of threes from Andrew Meadow and Dylan Andrews during a 16-5 run. Wichita State pulled within three on multiple occasions, including Gray's pull-up jumper at the 5:25 mark, but the Broncos closed the half on a 5-0 spurt to lead 32-27 at the break.
Boise State (4–1) was led by Drew Fielder's 17 points and six rebounds, while Meadow added 15 points and was 3-for-5 from deep.
