WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State knocked down its first three-pointer of the game and never looked back in a clinical 95-74 win over Loyola Chicago Thursday night in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (3-0) splashed in a school record-breaking 16 three-pointers on the night on just 32 attempts for an efficient 50 percent.
Kenyon Giles and
Michael Gray Jr. combined for 12 of those 16 three-pointers between the two of them. Giles went 7-for-8 for a game-high 24 points, just two points shy of his career high. Gray was 5-for-10 for 17 points.
Giles' seven made three-pointers tied for the fourth most in a single game in program history, finishing just two shy of the school record.
In total, Wichita State put five Shockers in double figures.
Will Berg tallied his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, one game after setting a career high in points with 15.
Dre Kindell provided another scoring punch off the bench with 12 points, seven assists an three steals. He has reached double figures in all three games to start his DI career.
Karon Boyd added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists, while providing lockdown defense once again.
Jaret Valencia made his Wichita State debut after missing the first two games with a minor injury. He chipped in six points and two boards in 15 minutes.
Emmanuel Okorafor had his best outing of the young season with eight points, six rebounds and a career-high tying four blocked shots.
Lost in the flurry of three-pointers falling through the nets, Wichita State also tied the school record for fewest turnovers in a game, finishing with just two on the night.
Over its last two games Wichita State is averaging 100.0 points per game on 47.3 percent shooting (26-for-55) from beyond the arc.
Loyola opened with two early threes from Deywilk Tavarez to take a 6–3 lead, but Wichita State quickly responded. A Valencia and-one finish kickstarted an 11-0 run, and the Shockers never trailed again. Giles' third triple pushed the margin to 25–12 with 13:35 left in the first half, and WSU maintained a double-digit advantage into the break, 50-36.
For the second straight game Wichita State put up 50 points in the first half.
Wichita State's relentless pressure opened the floodgates in the second half. After Loyola trimmed the margin to 55–48, the Shockers ripped off a 15-0 run fueled by Giles, Berg and Okorafor. A layup from Kindell at the 2:10 mark gave Wichita State its largest lead of the night at 28, effectively sealing the dominant performance.
