Shockers Even Series with Run-Rule Victory on Saturday

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State bounced back to even the series with Tulsa behind an 11-3 win on Saturday in 5 innings at Wilkins Stadium.

Wichita State (18-13, 9-5) recorded its sixth win of the season in run-rule fashion and avoided a series sweep. The Shockers look to claim the series on Sunday in the finale.

CC Wong did CC Wong things, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, three runs and a walk. After going hitless Friday night, Addison Barnard regrouped with a 2-for-2 day, including a double, RBI and two runs. Taylor Sedlacek blasted her third career grand slam and second of the season. Sami Hood drove in a pair of runs on a double. Krystin Nelson and Siera Hoekstra both added a hit.

Alison Cooper (4-5) picked up the win in the circle, throwing all 5.0 innings. She allowed three runs on six hits and just one walk, while striking out two.

Wichita State's offense put some early pressure on Tulsa with a single from Wong and a Barnard double to open the bottom of the first. The Shockers would only turn it into one run on a Bailey Urban RBI groundout.

Tulsa quickly tied the game in the top of the second behind an RBI single with two outs.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Wichita State went to work. Hoekstra started a two-out rally with a walk, followed by a Nelson single and a Wong walk to load the bases. Barnard kept the inning alive with a hit by pitch to put the Shockers back in front by a run. Needing a big hit to break it open, Sedlacek delivered in a big way. The sophomore cleared the bases with her second grand slam of the season to make it 6-1.

Tulsa clawed back within three behind a single run in the top of the third and fourth only to see the Shockers plate four in the home half of the fourth. An RBI single from Wong drove in Hoekstra who doubled to lead off the inning. After a Barnard infield single put runners on the corners, the Shockers went to work on the basepaths. A double steal with Barnard and Wong put it back to a five-run game, 8-3. Hood capped the frame with a two-run double to the right-center gap.

The Shockers finished it off in the fifth after loading the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks, paving the way for Wong. Wong crushed an infield single three feet in front of the plate just far enough for the final run to slide in.
