LAWRENCE – Wichita State led by as many as six in a game with six lead changes but came up just short in the fourth quarter as the Jayhawks claimed a 70-60 victory Thursday evening in Allen Fieldhouse.
Â
In head coach
Terry Nooner's return to Allen Fieldhouse after playing and coaching for the Jayhawks, his Shockers held Kansas to its second lowest field goal percentage of the season (.349).
Â
Junior
Princess Anderson led Wichita State in scoring for the second-consecutive game with 16 points, and senior
Taylor Jameson hit three three pointers for the third time this season on her way to 13 points.
Â
Wichita State out-rebounded the Jayhawks 42-37 as senior
Ella Anciaux led the Shockers with a season-high nine boards. Redshirt-junior
Jayla Murray scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, and senior
Aicha Ndour scored eight points and recorded five rebounds.
Â
Both teams experienced foul trouble with two Shockers (Ndour and
Bre'Yon White) and one Jayhawk (Laia Conesa) fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Â
S'Mya Nichols, who averaged 21.4 points per game coming into this game, picked up her fourth foul less than a minute into the third quarter after scoring 13 of KU's 33 first-half points and didn't re-enter the game until halfway through the fourth quarter. Nichols still put up a game-high 19 points for the Jayhawks in her 19 minutes.
Â
Free throw shooting plagued the Shockers again as they shot just 12-for-23 from the line, and Kansas scored 28 points off 21 Wichita State turnovers.
Â
The Jayhawks took a four-point in the first quarter, but the Shockers came out swinging in the second as Jameson hit back-to-back-to-back threes to score the first nine points of the period to give Wichita State a five-point advantage.
Â
Anderson and Jameson combined for 16 of the Shockers' 19 second quarter points, but the Jayhawks were able to tie it up at 33-33 going into halftime, courtesy of a second-chance layup by Conesa as time expired.
Â
Wichita State out-scored the Jayhawks 16-13 in the third quarter to claim a three-point lead going into the final quarter, but the Shockers shot just 3-for-10 from the field and 0-for-5 from three and committed 10 fouls as Kansas capitalized at the free throw line, shooting 11-for-15 on its way to 24 fourth quarter points.
Â
Wichita State fell to 3-6, and the Jayhawks improved to 8-1. The Shockers return home to face undefeated Western Kentucky on Sunday, Dec. 8.
