Parrish Claims High Point Award, Masters Leaps to National No. 3

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Wichita State freshman Josh Parrish won the 60-meter hurdles and long jump, earning the High Point Award at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular Friday at Anschutz Pavilion.
 
Wichita State placed third as a team with 190.5 points, while Kansas claimed the team title with 245.5 points, and Kansas State finished second with 228 points.
 
Parrish ran the sixth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in Shocker history, clocking a 7.90 to win the event and break the meet record, edging out Jaleel Montgomery, who ran 7.93, the seventh-fastest time in school history.
 
The freshman from Olathe, Kan. also jumped 7.09m/23'3.5" to lead the Shockers to a long jump sweep as Yuben Goncalves jumped the same distance for second place, and Adria Navajon placed third with a jump of 6.99m/22'11.25".
 
Parrish capped off his Shocker debut with a fourth-place performance in the triple jump, jumping 14.02m/46'0" to bring his individual point total to 17, the highest of the meet.
 
In the high jump, Destiny Masters cleared a personal-best 1.85m/6'0.75" to improve her mark at No. 2 all-time in Shocker history and move up to No. 3 in the nation this year. She placed second behind K-State's Sharie Enoe, who cleared the second-best mark in the nation at 1.88m.
 
After just missing the 600-yard school record by 0.6 seconds a year ago, Farrah Miller broke the record in her second-place finish, running 1:23.55 in the seldom-run distance.
 
Brady Palen opened his season at No. 8 in the nation in the high jump with a 2.14m/7'0.25" clearance, placing second behind Kansas State's Aaron Antoine, who cleared 2.19m.
 
The Shockers' only event win on the women's side came from Lea Jerkovic in the 800 meters, where she ran 2:21.18.
 
Montgomery ran a 6.88 in the men's 60 meters, just 0.04 seconds off his personal best to place second in the event, and Sydney Brown tied her 60-meter personal best of 7.77 to finish third in the women's race. Brown went on to finish second in the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.96, and Montgomery placed third in the men's race in 22.27.
 
Creighton Camp threw the weight for the second time in two days, placing second with a throw of 15.76m/51'9.5".
 
Peyton Pogge and Adam Rzentkowski each earned third-place finishes in the 1,000 meters, running 3:02.55 and 2:28.58, respectively.
 
The American Athletic Conference cross country runner-up, Lucy Ndungu made her track and field debut for the Shockers, placing third in the 3,000 meters with a personal-best time of 10:05.22, and Zander Cobb placed second in the men's race with a personal best of 8:26.15.
 
Masters added to the point total for the Shockers with another second-place performance, jumping 5.73m/18'9.75" in the long jump, and Chidera Okoro and Yuben Goncalves both placed third in the triple jump with marks of 11.64m/38'2.25" and 14.18m/46'6.25", respectively.
 
The Shockers return to the track Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20 for the Prairie Wolf Invitational and Mark Colligan Memorial in Lincoln, Neb.
