WICHITA, Kan. – No. 23 Wichita State started the day with a 10-1 run-rule of Nebraska, only to fall to Missouri State, 2-1, in the nightcap Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.
Wichita State (18-5) concludes the Shocker Classic on Sunday vs. Missouri State at 2:30 p.m.
Game 1 vs. Nebraska
Wichita State scored 10 runs on 10 hits to complete the weekend sweep of Nebraska.
Addison Barnard,
Lauren Mills and
Sydney McKinney all had multi-hit games. Barnard was 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs and two RBI, while Mills was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI. McKinney scored a run, drove in a run and singled twice.
Taylor Sedlacek homered to go with two runs and two RBI.
Sami Hood,
Lauren Lucas and
Lainee Brown all added singles.
Lauren Howell (8-1) was solid once again in the circle. After surrendering three hits in the first inning, Nebraska had two hits the rest of the game. Howell allowed just the lone run in 5.0 innings, and struck out two.
Three straight hits for Nebraska in the top of the first put the Huskers up 1-0, but left two more in scoring position behind Howell's first strikeout.
Two batters into Wichita State's first plate appearance, Barnard tied the game at 1 with a solo shot into the wind. After back-to-back walks to
Zoe Jones and
Lauren Mills, Hood beat out an infield single, allowing Jones to come around from second to give the Shockers a 2-1 lead.
Wichita State hung a four-spot on the Huskers in the second on a Jones bases loaded walk and bases clearing double from Mills, making it 6-1.
The Shockers kept the pressure on in the third, scoring two more. RBI singles from McKinney and Barnard were the run producers.
The knockout blow was delivered in the bottom of the fourth on Sedlacek's two-run missile to dead center.
Game 2 vs. Missouri State
All eight hits for Wichita State came off the bats of
Addison Barnard,
Sydney McKinney,
Krystin Nelson and
Sami Hood. Barnard had three of those hits, followed by McKinney and Nelson with two each.
Alex Aguilar suffered the loss in 3.0 innings, dropping to 4-2 on the season. She allowed one run on three hits and three walks.
Kenzie Schopfer threw an inning of relief and gave up a run on a hit.
Alison Cooper struck out three in the final 3.0 innings. She allowed just two hits.
Aguilar ran into some trouble in the top of the third, loading the bases on a single and two walks. Her third walk of the inning would break up the scoreless game, putting the Bears on the board, 1-0.
Missouri State's insurance run in the fifth proved to be the difference.
Wichita State's comeback bid came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. McKinney and Barnard ripped back-to-back singles to keep hopes alive.
Lauren Lucas hit a grounder that glanced off the first baseman's glove into right field, allowing McKinney to come in from second.
Zoe Jones stepped in with the game-tying run at third, but flew out to center for the final out.
