No. 23 Wichita State Bounces Back with Run-Rule of Missouri State

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 23 Wichita State regrouped from a 2-1 defeat Saturday night to Missouri State to run-rule the Bears in five innings, 13-2, Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.

Wichita State (19-5) finished the Shocker Classic, 3-1, with two wins over Nebraska and Sunday's victory over Missouri State.

Lauren Lucas was one of six Shockers with multiple hits on the afternoon, as Wichita State finished with 18 as a team. Lucas was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Krystin Nelson had a career-high three hits to go with two runs and an RBI. Lauren Mills doubled and singled twice.

Sydney McKinney was 2-for-4 with her fifth triple of the season and a season-high three RBI. Zoe Jones drove in three runs on two hits and Lainee Brown had a pair of hits, including a home run. Taylor Sedlacek hit her third home run of the weekend.

Lauren Howell won her team-leading ninth game in the circle, improving to 9-1. She struck out four over 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs. After the first inning, Howell allowed only one baserunner. Alex Aguilar threw the final inning of relief, retiring all three Bears she faced.

Missouri State sent seven hitters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring a pair of runs on four hits. Wichita State cut the deficit in half on a Mills RBI single, but left a pair on base to end the first inning.

A Brown solo homer in the second tied the game at 2-2.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the third. Wichita State scored six runs, all with two outs. Nelson opened the scoring with an RBI single, and then the very next batter, McKinney, lined a two-run triple to center. Back-to-back RBI singles from Lucas and Jones capped the big inning.

The knockout blow was delivered in the fourth with five more runs. A leadoff solo home run from Sedlacek kickstarted the frame. RBI singles from McKinney and Lucas made it 11-2, and then the final two runs crossed on RBI groundouts from Jones and Caroline Tallent.
