UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The combination of difficult weather conditions and an already challenging course produced high scores across the board at the Redhawk Invitational on Tuesday. The Shockers finished 16th out of 23 participants, as no team finished the day under par.
What was originally slated to be a 54-hole invitational was cut down to a single day of 18 holes due to rain and wind that hammered the area on Monday and Tuesday. The Shockers were holding steady in a tie for third on Monday when play was canceled for the day and all scores were forfeited.
Dawson Lewis and
Joe Bultman paced Wichita State (308, +24) with a 4-over 75, good for a tie for 31st place. Lewis recorded a pair of birdies (holes 15 and 18) while Bultman birdied the fourth hole and avoided any double bogeys for the day.
Brock Polhill and
Michael Winslow tied for 86th place with an 8-over 79, while
Lucas Scheufler finished 14-over in 119th.
Â
Boise State claimed the team title with a 3-over 287, five shots clear of Abilene Christian and Seton Hall. Max Charles of Boise State squeaked by Seattle's Nathan Cogswell for the individual championship, shooting 2-under 69 to nip Cogswell by a single stroke. No other individual golfer shot better than even par.
Known as a challenging course under the best of circumstances, a rainy and windy Chambers Bay proved even more difficult to conquer as no team in the field averaged under par on either par 3s or 4s.Â
Â
Bultman finished in a tie for 10th with 12 pars for the day, while Lewis and Polhill tied for 27th with their two birdies apiece.
The Shockers head to Columbia, Missouri for the MU Tiger Invitational next Monday and Tuesday. It is the final tournament of the season before the American Athletic Conference Championship April 22-24.
