BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – The Wichita State men's golf team heads to Southern Hills Plantation Club for the 2022 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship beginning on Friday morning. The Shockers are seeded eighth and will tee off along with #7 East Carolina and #9 Temple in the 7:00-7:40 am group. Teams will then be re-paired for round two on Saturday based on the standings after round one. The squads will play 18 holes each day, crowning a champion on Sunday.
Defending champion South Florida is the top seed in this year's tournament. The Bulls are ranked #42 according to Golfstat, one slot ahead of SMU. Houston (#61), UCF (#68), Cincinnati (#72), Memphis (#100), East Carolina (#126) and Temple (#187) round out the field. South Florida's Albin Bergstrom is the defending individual champion.
The Shockers finished 4th at the AAC Championship in 2021, a program-best after finishing at the bottom of the standings in both 2018 and 2019.
Marcus Wochner finished in a tie for second to lead the Shockers, while returners
Brock Polhill and
Dawson Lewis ended in a tie for 31st and 35th, respectively.Â
Wichita State has put together two of their best performances of the season over the course of the last three tournaments, finishing 3rd at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield and 2nd at the MU Tiger Invitational in Columbia. Polhill, Lewis, and
Lucas Scheufler have all earned Men's Golf Player of the Week honors during that stretch, and headline the WSU lineup heading to Brooksville. Head Coach
Judd Easterling has turned in the same five from Columbia, albeit in a different order. Polhill,
Joe Bultman, Lewis,
Michael Winslow, and Scheufler will represent the Shockers in Brooksville.Â
That five put together arguably the best showing of the season last time out at The Club at Old Hawthorne, including a second-round 272 that paced the field. Polhill led the way in second place, while Lewis finished 15th, Bultman and Scheufler tied for 28th, and Winslow wrapped up play in 71st.
Located just north of Tampa, Southern Hills will play as a par-72, 7,274-yard course this weekend. Live scoring is available via Golfstat, and final round coverage will be held on ESPN Plus.
