Shockers Host Tulane on Senior Night

WICHITA, Kan. - The 2021-22 regular season finale will see Wichita State and Tulane face off on Senior Night in Charles Koch Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State dropped its third straight game in the Shockers' regular season road finale, 61-49, last Sunday at Tulsa. Wichita State committed 22 turnovers, compared to just five for the Golden Hurricane. The five turnovers marked the fewest by an opposing team this season. Tulsa outscored Wichita State, 22-7, off those miscues. Wichita State's two steals were a season low. Despite outrebounding Tulsa, 44-28, Wichita State attempted 13 fewer field goals in the game. Trajata Colbert was the lone Shocker in double figures, recording her second double-double of the season. Colbert scored a season-high 19 points to go with 13 rebounds. Mariah McCully dished out a career-high six assists.

SCOUTING THE GREEN WAVE
Tulane is the hottest team in the league, having won nine straight games. Tulane enters at 20-7 overall and 11-4 in league play. Tulane relies on a four-headed scoring attack, led by Baylor transfer Moon Ursin. Ursin leads the Green Wave in scoring (13.7), rebounding (8.5) and assists (95). Ursin has logged 10 double-doubles and a triple-double this season. Dynah Jones and Krystal Freeman put up 13.3 and 12.0 points per game, respectively. Arsula Clark has dished out 91 assists to go with 11.7 points. The Green Wave ranks eighth nationally in rebounds per game, 15th in total rebounds, 21st in rebound margin, 17th in free throws made and 25th in free throw attempts

THE SERIES VS. TULANE
Wichita State and Tulane have met nine times prior to Wednesday's matchup with Tulane grabbing a 5-4 lead with a win in the first meeting this season. The Green Wave have won four of the last five meetings. Tulane completed the regular season series sweep a season ago. Wichita State is1-2 all-time vs. Tulane in Charles Koch Arena.

LAST MEETING
In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Wichita State jumped out to an 8-point lead after 10 minutes, but Tulane would trim it to one at half and then outscore the Shockers 28-13 in the third quarter. Tulane ran away with a 67-52 win in New Orleans on Jan. 22. Wichita State was 11-for-12 at the free throw line, but committed 22 turnovers and shot just 34.5 percent. DJ McCarty scored a team-high 14 points to go with five rebounds. Jane Asinde added 10 points and nine rebounds.

SENIOR NIGHT
Four student-athletes will make their final appearance in Charles Koch Arena Wednesday night vs. Tulane as part of Senior Night. Seraphine Bastin, Carla Bremaud, Mariah McCully and Asia Strong will be honored following the game. All four have essentially been penciled in as starters since their arrival on campus. Bastin and Bremaud arrived four years, while McCully and Strong arrived after prolific junior college stints.

WANTED FOR THEFT
Wichita State senior guard Mariah McCully has been pest on defense for opposing offenses through 27 games this season. McCully had her streak of 14 straight games with a steal  snapped vs. UCF, but has swiped at least one in 24 of the 27 games she's played. She's had multiple in 16 of the 27. Her 52 steals easily lead the team and rank fifth in the American Athletic Conference. Her 1.93 steals per game rank sixth in the conference. During her first season at Wichita State (2019-20), McCully had a career-long 19-game streak with a steal, including a career-high seven at Tulane on Feb. 16, 2020.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING      
Wichita State is ranked in the top 100 nationally in 10 categories after the first 28 games. The Shockers rank No. 16 in total rebounds (1,182), No. 18 in offensive rebounds per game (15.2), No. 20 in rebounds per game (42.21), No. 52 in free throw percentage (75.2), No. 67 in three-point field goal defense (28.5), No. 69 in rebound margin (4.7), No. 70 in field goal percentage defense (37.3), No. 74 in blocked shots (107), No. 85 in steals (242) and No. 93 in blocked shots per game (3.8).

GLASS CLEANERS
Wichita State is off to an impressive start rebounding the basketball through its first 28 games. The Shockers have outrebounded all but nine teams and currently average 42.2 rebounds a game, which ranks 20th nationally. Their 1182 total rebounds rank 16th in the NCAA. Wichita State ranks 18th in offensive rebounds per game and 69th in rebound margin. As it stands now, Four different Shockers pull down at least 5.4 boards per game, led by Jane Asinde at 8.4.

DYNAMIC POINT GUARD
• Wichita State point guard Seraphine Bastin had her best season in a Shocker uniform in 2020-21. Bastin averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals a game, while shooting 78.7 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-8 guard led the team in rebounding, assists, steals and double-doubles. In The American, Bastin ranked second in free throw percentage, third in assists, fourth in rebounding and fifth in assist-turnover ratio.

• She is off to another great start on the glass in 2021-22. Her 6.8 rebounds rank second on the team, and she's already had five games with 10 boards. In all but four games she's had five or more rebounds. Her season low is two.

• Bastin entered the Wichita State top 10 list for career assists on Nov. 26 vs. Alcorn State. She passed Allison Daniel who held the No. 10 spot with 308 career dimes. She has since moved into sole possession of 6th. Bastin is already in the top 10 for career assists per game at 3.8. Her 3.8 helpers rank ninth best in school history.

• The Dinant, Belgium, native has a bulldog mentality and that is evident in her rebounding. Bastin led Wichita State and ranked sixth in the American Athletic Conference in rebounding at 7.7 per game and 131 total rebounds in 2020-21. Her 131 rebounds were 15 more than the next closest Shocker, which was Trajata Colbert with 116. Bastin has been one of the program's best rebounders since she arrived in 2018. She has 586 career rebounds, far and away the team's active leader. She has averaged 4.6 rebounds or more every season, including her career best 7.7 in 2020-21.
