Shockers, Pirates Meet for Round Two

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State travels to Greenville, N.C., to face the East Carolina Pirates for round two this season on Wednesday.

ON THE AIR
Wednesday's game can be heard on the radio at KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM with Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his eighth season as the radio voice for Wichita State women's basketball. The game will also be televised on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State dropped its third straight game following a 65-58 loss vs. Tulsa Sunday afternoon. The loss also snapped a four-game win streak vs. Tulsa making Wichita State 21-5 all-time vs. the Golden Hurricane. Asia Strong scored 13 of her team-high 15 points before halftime, including 11 in the second quarter to go with six rebounds. Trajata Colbert was 7-for-10 from the fiel and finished with 12 points and seven boards off the bench. Seraphine Bastin returned from a four-game absence due to injury and chipped in 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. It marked the first time in her career she played but wasn't in the starting lineup. Nhug Bosch Duran dished out a season-high eight assists.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES
East Carolina is 8-14 overall and 1-8 in American Athletic Conference play, having lost five straight. East Carolina is led by Taniyah Thompson who posts 16.9 points and 4.3 rebounds a game to go with 34 steals. Thompson is the second leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference, while also leading the league in field goals made and attempted and in total points. East Carolina also boasts the conference's top shot blocker in Tylar Bennett. Bennett's 39 blocks rank first in the American and 37th nationally. The Pirates are known for their defense and creating turnovers. They rank 15th in the nation in steals and 12th in turnovers forced. East Carolina is also a top 30 team in offensive rebounds and blocks.

THE SERIES VS. EAST CAROLINA
Wichita State and East Carolina have met seven times prior to Wednesday's showdown with the Shockers owning a slight 4-3 lead in the series. ECU won the first two meetings only to see Wichita State take the next three. Wichita State has won four of the last five meetings, including the first matchup this season in Wichita, 70-55, on Jan. 25. Wichita State is just 1-3 vs. the Pirates in Greenville.

LAST MEETING
In the first meeting between the Shockers and Pirates, Wichita State trailed by a point at halftime, but outscored ECU 18-6 in the third quarter to pull away with a 70-55 win on Jan. 25 in Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State was outrebounded and committed 19 turnovers, but a stout defensive effort helped the Shockers overcome those deficits. ECU shot just 32.2 percent from the floor and turned it over 21 times. Four Shockers finished in double figures led by Jane Asinde's 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Mariah McCully added 19 and a career-high tying seven rebounds. Asia Strong and DJ McCarty chipped in 15 and 10, respectively.

BASTIN'S BACK      
Junior point guard Seraphine Bastin returned to the line up on Feb. 6 vs. Tulsa after missing four straight games due injury. Bastin came off the bench for the first time in her career and chipped in 12 points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. With her out of the lineup Wichita State lost the rebound battle in all four games.

WANTED FOR THEFT
Wichita State senior guard Mariah McCully has been pest on defense for opposing offenses through 20 games this season. McCully had her streak of 14 straight games with a steal  snapped vs. UCF, but has swiped at least one in 18 of the 20 games she's played. She's had multiple in 12 of the 20. Her 40 steals easily lead the team and rank fifth in the American Athletic Conference. Her 2.00 steals per game also rank fifth in the conference. During her first season at Wichita State (2019-20), McCully had a career-long 19-game streak with a steal, including a career-high seven at Tulane on Feb. 16, 2020.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING      
Wichita State is ranked in the top 100 nationally in nine categories after the first 21 games. The Shockers rank No. 12 in rebounds per game (43.48), No. 11 in offensive rebounds per game (15.8), No. 26 in total rebounds (913), No. 66 in rebound margin (5.0), No. 72 in field goal percentage defense (37.3), No. 80 in blocked shots (83), No. 84 in blocked shots per game (4.0), No. 87 in free throw percentage (73.5) and No. 90 in in steals (184).

GLASS CLEANERS
Wichita State is off to an impressive start rebounding the basketball through its first 21 games. The Shockers have outrebounded all but seven teams and currently average 43.5 rebounds a game, which ranks 12th nationally. Their 913 total rebounds rank 26th in the NCAA. Wichita State ranks 11th in offensive rebounds per game and 66th in rebound margin. As it stands now, Four different Shockers pull down at least 5.6 boards per game, led by Jane Asinde at 8.9.

DYNAMIC POINT GUARD
• Wichita State point guard Seraphine Bastin had her best season in a Shocker uniform in 2020-21. Bastin averaged 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals a game, while shooting 78.7 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-8 guard led the team in rebounding, assists, steals and double-doubles. In The American, Bastin ranked second in free throw percentage, third in assists, fourth in rebounding and fifth in assist-turnover ratio.

• She is off to another great start on the glass in 2021-22. Her 7.1 rebounds rank second on the team, and she's already had four games with 10 boards. In all but three games she's had five or more rebounds. Her season low is two.

• Bastin entered the Wichita State top 10 list for career assists on Nov. 26 vs. Alcorn State. She passed Allison Daniel who held the No. 10 spot with 308 career dimes. Bastin is already in the top 10 for career assists per game at 3.8. Her 3.8 helpers rank ninth best in school history.

• The Dinant, Belgium, native has a bulldog mentality and that is evident in her rebounding. Bastin led Wichita State and ranked sixth in the American Athletic Conference in rebounding at 7.7 per game and 131 total rebounds in 2020-21. Her 131 rebounds were 15 more than the next closest Shocker, which was Trajata Colbert with 116. Bastin has been one of the program's best rebounders since she arrived in 2018. She has 489 career rebounds, far and away the team's active leader. She has averaged 4.6 rebounds or more every season, including her career best 7.7 in 2020-21.
