Shockers Run-Rule Houston Baptist Behind Three Home Runs

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – No. 25 Wichita State used a six-run bottom of the fifth to pull away from Houston Baptist, 10-2, Saturday night on day two of the Bearkat Classic.

Wichita State (3-0) hit three more home runs, running its two-day total to nine.

Sydney McKinney continued her white-hot start at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run, triple, three runs and three RBI. Her four hits tied a career high and she is now 9-for-12 through three games.

Addison Barnard went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Zoe Jones also collected a pair of hits, one of them being a solo home run. Lauren Mills smashed her first home run of the season, driving in three runs in the process.

Kenzie Schopfer (1-0) made her collegiate debut in the circle and allowed two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. She walked just one batter and struck out four. Caitlin Bingham pitched an inning of relief, striking out two.

Jones opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice. The Shockers added one more in the next inning after McKinney tripled and Barnard singled to make it 2-0.

Houston Baptist cut the lead in half in the top of the third on an RBI double, but Wichita State immediately got the run back on a leadoff solo home run from Jones.

After the Huskies again cut the lead to one on a sac fly in the top of the fifth, Wichita State took control. Camryn Compton tripled to begin the inning and would come home on McKinney's home run to right. Following a Barnard single and Neleigh Herring walk, Mills promptly unloaded the bases on an opposite field three-run blast. Her first home run of the season put Wichita State in front, 9-2.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, McKinney came through with her fourth hit, a single through the left side to end the game in run-rule fashion.
