Shockers Split Final Day at Bearkat Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – No. 25 Wichita State dropped its first game of the season in a 3-0 shutout to South Dakota, but regrouped to defeat Sam Houston in the finale, 16-9, on Sunday.

Addison Barnard moved into a tie for ninth on the career home run list with her 25th career round-tripper vs. Sam Houston.

Game 1 vs. South Dakota

Wichita State was held to just five hits in the shutout loss. Camryn Compton was responsible for two of those hits, going 2-for-2.

Erin McDonald fell to 1-1 in the circle this season after allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out seven and walked three in 6.0 innings.

Neither team put a run on the board for the first five full innings until Jadyn DeWitte hit the game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth with two outs.

Game 2 vs. Sam Houston

Bailey Urban finished off a great weekend at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Zoe Jones drove in four runs on a career-high three doubles and Barnard scored a career-high five runs on a 2-for-2 day with three walks and a home run. Neleigh Herring and Lauren Mills both added a pair of RBI.

Caitlin Bingham made her second start of the weekend, but went just 2.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks. Jordyn Pipkin made her Wichita State debut in relief. Pipkin allowed three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings.

A leadoff walk for Barnard followed by a stolen base, wild pitch and throwing error put the Shockers on the board early. Four batters later, an RBI double for Jones made it 2-0 in the top of the first.

Sam Houston would come right back with three runs of its own in the bottom half. The Shockers answered with a four-run top of the second to take a 6-3 lead. An RBI single for Urban, bases loaded walk for Lauren Mills and two-run double for Jones made up the scoring in the frame.

The Bearkats scratched out three more runs of their own in the home half of the second on back-to-back two-out doubles.

Wichita State grabbed a 9-6 lead in the third after Wylie Glover led off with a double. She would come in to score on a Lauren Lucas RBI groundout. A bases loaded walk for Neleigh Herring and RBI groundout for Mills made up the other two runs in the inning.

Four runs in the fifth and then back-to-back home runs from Barnard and Urban in the sixth put the game out of reach, 15-6. However, Sam Houston would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to keep the run-rule off the table.

The final run came in the top of the seventh after Jones' third double of the day and a Wylie Glover's RBI single.
