WICHITA – The Wichita State track and field team released its 2023 indoor and outdoor schedules Wednesday.
The Shockers held their first meet of the season Dec. 1-2 as a handful of multi-event athletes opened their seasons at the Shocker Multi. Wichita State is set to host the ninth-annual KU-KSU-WSU Triangular in Topeka at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility and will host one indoor meet, the Herm Wilson Invitational (Jan. 27-28), at the Heskett Center and three outdoor meets, the Shocker Spring Invitational (Mar. 24-25), K.T. Woodman Classic (Apr. 6-8) and Shocker Open (May 5), at Cessna Stadium.
Wichita State's first true road meet will be at Air Force, the site of the 2021 Championship at the Peak where
Joseph Holthusen ran 7.74 in the 60-meter hurdles to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Shockers will make two trips to Ames, Iowa during the indoor season for the Cyclone Open (Jan. 21) and the Iowa State Classic (Feb. 4). The Lied Recreation-Athletic Facility features a 300-meter flat track and has been the home of 12 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The squad will split for the Feb. 4 weekend as part of the team will travel to Vermillion, S.D. for the South Dakota Invitational. The final two regular season meets will be the Ichabod Mid-Week Challenge at Washburn (Feb. 9) and the Arkansas Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark. (Feb. 17).
The American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-25) will return to Birmingham, Ala. for the fifth-straight season (not counting COVID-19 year), followed by the NCAA Indoor Championships (Mar. 10-11) in College Station, Texas. Athletes must record a top-16 mark in the nation in order to qualify to the national meet.
Wichita State will open the outdoor season the same way as last season at the ESU Invitational in Emporia, followed by the home-opener Shocker Spring Invitational. The Shockers will then split the next weekend between the Texas Relays (Mar. 29-Apr. 1) and the Friends Spring Open (Mar. 31-Apr. 1).
After returning home for the K.T. Woodman Classic, the team will compete in back-to-back meets in Lawrence at Rock Chalk Park and a select group will race at Drake Relays (Apr. 27-29) in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Shockers will host one last meet before flying to Tampa, Fla. for the AAC Outdoor Championships (May 12-14).
Athletes in the top-48 in the west in their events will compete in Sacramento, Calif. at the NCAA West Preliminaries (May 24-27), and the top 12 from each prelim will compete for All-American status at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (Jun. 7-10) in Austin, Texas.
