WICHITA, Kan. -- Grand Canyon claimed two back-and-forth sets with late rallies, knocking off Wichita State 15-25, 27-25, 24-26, 23-25 on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State ends the season 18-13, while Grand Canyon advances to Round 2 of the NIVC to take on Drake on Monday night.
The Lopes (18-10) used a key 7-0 run to grab control of the opening set, turning a 12-11 lead into 19-11. Grand Canyon finished the first set with just one more kill than the Shockers, but WSU had eight attack errors, five service errors, one blocking error and one ball-handing error to produce more than half of the GCU points.
The second set was closely contested, as neither side could establish more than a three-point advantage. GCU appeared to take control late with a kill from Melanie Brecka that made it 22-20 GCU, but the Shockers fought back, scoring four of the next five points to reach set point at 24-23. GCU leveled the score and then reached set point of their own, leading 25-24 when Tatum Parrott terminated.
Brylee Kelly spurred the Shockers back, putting down two kills over the next three points sandwiched around a Parrott error to even the match at a set apiece.
Wichita State crawled out of a deeper hole in the third set, erasing a 23-19 deficit thanks to a GCU service error and two Lopes attack errors. A kill from Kelly deadlocked the score at 24-all, but a WSU service error brought up set point and Klaire Mitchell followed with an ace to give the Lopes a 2-1 edge.
It was GCU's turn to rally in the fourth set, as the Shockers took a 23-22 lead thanks to a block from
Natalie Foster. Melanie Brecka fired two kills around an ace from Megan Taflinger, as the Lopes scored three straight points to snatch the set and the match.
Kelly and Foster led the Shockers with 12 kills apiece, while setter
Kayce Litzau handed out 41 assists. Playing in her final match as a Shocker, libero
Lily Liekweg led the team with 18 digs. Kelly secured a double-double with 12 digs of her own, and
Morgan Weber contributed 13.
