OPENING TIPS:
- The Wichita State Shockers open the road portion of their schedule Thursday night against the Richmond Spiders. Tipoff from the Robins Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT), and the game will air on ESPN+.
- The first-ever meeting between the programs tips off a home-and-home series that will continue next November in Wichita.
- The Shockers (1-1) are eager for redemption after a 66-57 loss to Alcorn State on Saturday, in which they missed 20 of their 24 attempts from three-point range.
- Richmond is coming off a 92-90 overtime loss at Charleston on Monday night. The Spiders trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half but rallied back behind Tyler Burton's career-high 38 points.
- Over the last 10 seasons (2013-14 to pr.) WSU's .719 road winning percentage is second only to Gonzaga.
- WSU has won seven-straight non-conference road games since 2018-19 -- Six vs. major conference foes: Clemson (ACC), Indiana (Big Ten), Mizzou (SEC), Ole Miss (SEC) and twice at Oklahoma State (Big 12).
- Notably, the Shockers' last non-conference road loss came in Richmond, Va. -- less than 10 miles away at VCU's Siegel Center.
- Third-year head coach Isaac Brown looks to continue the road show with an almost entirely different cast of characters. 10 of the 12 players who have seen action this year are new to the active roster. That group includes eight transfers and a pair of redshirt freshmen.
- Fifth-year senior point guard Craig Porter Jr. and sophomore big man Kenny Pohto are the only returners who saw minutes for WSU in 2021-22.
- Porter leads the team in points (15.5), rebounds (6.5) and assists (3.5) while shooting 59% from the field. He scored a career-high 22 in the season-opener against Central Arkansas.
- Pohto (8.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg) led the scoring against Alcorn State with 13 points.
- 6-7 guard Jaykwon Walton ranks second on the team at 10.5 points-per-game and is coming off a 12-point effort.
- Per KenPom, WSU's bench has played 39.8% of the minutes this season (23rd nationally, as of Tuesday). The Shockers' 30.67 bench points-per-game leads the American Athletic Conference.
- Opponents are shooting 36.7% against the Shockers, including 22.4% from long range. Richmond has limited its foes to 34.5% from the field and 22.2% from deep.
- This is one of five 1,000+ mile road trips that the Shockers will take in 2022-23. Richmond is 1,081 miles from Wichita, as the crow flies. In league play, WSU will visit Tampa, Fla. (1,090 miles), Greenville, N.C. (1,112), Orlando, Fla. (1,121) and Philadelphia, Pa. (1,201).

TRENDING:
- Per KenPom, WSU ranks among college basketball's bottom-50 in minutes continuity (just 18.8% of the team's minutes have been played by returners, 312th nationally). The Shockers' first two foes have been on the opposite end of the spectrum (Central Arkansas, 31st and Alcorn State, 53rd). Richmond ranks 227th at 35.2%.
- In just two games as a Shocker, Jaykwon Walton has already tallied more points (23), steals (3), assists (3) and minutes (53) than he did in two seasons at Georgia. Injuries and illness limited Walton to just seven games as a true freshman and he entered the transfer portal two games into his sophomore campaign. In all, he tallied 17 points in 52 minutes.
- Saturday's 12-point effort doubled Walton's previous career-high set three years ago against Delaware State (11/15/2019).
- In parts of three seasons under Brown, WSU is 20-4 when outshooting its foe from the field and 21-5 when finishing with a higher three-point percentage.
- The Shockers are also 22-1 when scoring at least 70 in regulation and a perfect 8-0 when they make it to 80.
- Florida State transfer Quincy Ballard has made the most of limited opportunities (17 minutes through two games). On a per-40-minute basis, he's averaging a team-best 23.6 points, 11.8 rebounds and 7.1 blocks.
SCOUTING RICHMOND:
- Richmond (24-13 last year) finished sixth in the Atlantic-10 regular season race but won four A-10 tournament games in four days to secure the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The 12th-seeded Spiders continued their momentum with a first-round upset of Iowa.
- Richmond is picked seventh out of 15 teams in this year's A-10 preseason coaches poll.
- 18th-year head coach Chris Mooney is Richmond's all-time wins leader (314).
- Mooney lost a talented senior class but can lean on veteran forward Tyler Burton, an All-A10 selection who has over 1,000 points and 500 rebounds for his career.
- Burton enters the game as the Spiders' leader in points (20.3), rebounds (8.7) and minutes-per-game (34.1). He's averaging 2.3 threes on 36.8% accuracy and has converted 14 of his 15 free throw attempts.
- Burton scored a career-high 38 in Monday's 92-90 loss at Charleston. The Spiders trailed by as many as 21 points (56-35 with 15:40 to play) but rallied to force overtime.
- Richmond is 2-0 at home with wins over VMI (69-48) and Northern Iowa (68-55). The latter is a potential Shocker opponent in next week's Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City.
- 6-5 senior guard Andre Gustavson (4.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg) is Richmond's other returning starter.
- Gone is Jacob Gilyard, who started 154-straight games at point guard over the last five seasons, but redshirt freshman Jacob Nelson has filled the void, averaging 14.7 points and 3.0 assists over the first three games.
- The Spiders have size in the front court with 6-foot-9 senior Matt Grace (7.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, team-high 3.3 apg) at power forward, 7-foot Lafayette transfer Neal Quinn (6.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg) at center and 6-7 Wofford grad transfer Isaiah Bigelow (8.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg) as weapon off the bench.
- Richmond has held its three opponents to a combined 34.5% from the field, including 22.2% from three.
- The Spiders have won nine-straight non-conference home games, last losing to Hostra in December, 2020.
- Richmond is one of four first-time foes on the Shockers' non-conference schedule, along with Grand Canyon (Nov. 21 in Kansas City), Longwood (Dec. 10) and Mississippi Valley State (Dec. 13).
A SHOCKER WIN WOULD….
... Make them 2-1.
... Give them eight straight non-conference road wins dating back to March, 2019.
... Up their road record to 9-7 under
Isaac Brown and 96-35 since the start of the 2010-11 season.
... Make them 1-0 all-time vs. Richmond.
