Shockers Close Out Regular Season at Tulsa

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State concludes regular season play on Tuesday, March 2 at Tulsa with tip scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.

ON THE AIR
Tuesday's game can be heard on the radio at KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his seventh season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game will also be televised on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.

A CASE OF THE 'RONA
COVID-19 has wrecked havoc on the 2020-21 Wichita State women's basketball program. To date, the Shockers have had eight games postponed due to positive tests within the program. The Shockers are coming off a pause in all team-related activities due to a lack of players available that saw games against ECU, Memphis and USF all postponed. As of now, Wichita State's two matchups vs. SMU are the only contests that will not be made up, due to the Mustangs canceling the remainder of their season.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State dropped its fifth straight game following a 77-65 loss vs. Houston last Wednesday. Wichita State was a season-best 21-of-25 from the free throw line, as the two teams combined to shoot 54 free throws in the contest. Wichita State was a season-worst 2-of-17 from beyond the arc. Senior Mariah McCully scored 12 of her game-high 19 points before halftime, while Asia Strong added 15 points and eight rebounds. DJ McCarty tallied 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds off the bench. Trajata Colbert (11) and Seraphine Bastin (10) both finished with double-figure rebounds. Only one other Shocker had a rebound in the game, which was Ene Adams with one.

STRONG START
Wichita State junior forward Asia Strong is off to fast start in her first season at Wichita State. The South Bend, Ind., native has scored 10 or more points in 14 of the team's 15 games, including three games of 20 or more. In Wichita State's 10 league games, she has scored 11 or more in every game and is averaging 15.5 points. Strong set a season high in points and rebounds vs. UNI on Dec. 6 with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Strong leads Wichita State in scoring at 15.5 points per game for the season, which ranks fifth in the American Athletic Conference. Her 43.7% shooting also ranks fifth in the league.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Tulsa enters the matchup at 5-12 overall and 4-12 in league play, having lost six straight games. The Mayberry sisters team up to lead the Golden Hurricane. Junior Maya Mayberry averages a team-high 13.9 points, while her younger sister, freshman Wyvette, scores 11.6 a contest to go with a team-leading 49 assists. The pair is scoring 45.5 percent (422 of 927) of Tulsa's total points. Maya Mayberry leads the American Athletic Conference in three-pointers made, three-point field goals per game and three-point percentage. Her 40.2 percent shooting from deep ranks 47th nationally.

THE SERIES VS. TULSA
Wichita State and Tulsa have met 23 times, dating all the way back to the first meeting on March 2, 1978. The Shockers own a 19-4 record vs. Tulsa and a 10-1 mark vs. the Hurricane in Wichita. Wichita State had won nine straight meetings before the two programs became league members again in 2017. Tulsa's lone win in Wichita came in 2017 in the Shockers' AAC opener. LAST MEETING
Wichita State and Tulsa met for the second time a season ago on Feb. 23, 2020. The Shockers swept the season series following a 70-61 win at Tulsa. Ashley Reid scored a team-high 13 points behind 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Seraphine Bastin registered a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Wichita State shot 42 percent from the field, but went just 11-of-19 at the free throw line. Tulsa could not capitalize on its opportunities at the stripe, going 14-of-29. Rebecca Lescay scored a game-high 23 points for the Hurricane in a losing effort.

DYNAMIC POINT GUARD
Wichita State's point guard Seraphine Bastin has started the season on a mission. Bastin is averaging 9.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.4 steals a game, while shooting 82.0 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-8 guard leads the team in rebounding, assists, steals and double-doubles. In two games at Houston and vs. Cincinnati, Bastin racked up double-doubles of 18 points and 11 rebounds and 10 rebounds and 10 assists. She missed a triple-double vs. Cincy by two points. In The American, Bastin ranks third in assist-turnover ratio (1.85) and free throw percentage (82.0),  fourth in assists (71) and  assists per game (4.7) and sixth in rebounds per game (7.3).

STRONG NABS FOURTH HONOR ROLL
Junior forward Asia Strong claimed her fourth American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll accolade on Feb. 22. Strong scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with seven rebounds at ECU on Feb. 20. It was her third 20-point outing of the season and ninth straight game in double figures.

POTENT TRIO FORMING      
Over Wichita State's last three games a three-headed scoring attack has emerged for the Shockers. Asia Strong, Mariah McCully and DJ McCarty have combined to score 128 of the team's 187 points (68.4 percent). Strong is averaging 17.7 points, while McCully and McCarty are posting 12.7 and 12.3 points, respectively.
