OPENING TIPS:
  • Wichita State continues its homestand Tuesday night against Alcorn State at Charles Koch Arena.
  • The teams have met just one other time. On Nov. 30, 2009, WSU routed the Braves, 87-52. Aaron Ellis led a group of five double-figure scorers with 14 points. WSU forced 19 first-half turnovers and 28 overall.
  • WSU improved to 3-0 against 2021 NCAA tournament teams with Saturday's 71-58 victory over Norfolk State. Morris Udeze and Tyson Etienne scored 16-each for the Shockers who tallied a season-high 18 assists on 25 baskets and committed a season-low eight turnovers. Craig Porter Jr. (7) Ricky Council (6) both set career assist highs and combined for just one giveaway.
  • ASU is 1-7 against one of the nation's toughest schedules. The Braves open with 16-straight road games -- three of them against 2021 Final Four teams -- before their Jan. 15 home debut against Texas Southern.
  • KenPom rates the Shockers 29th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. 23.2% of opponent possessions end in turnovers (35th nationally). Foes are shooting just 27.3% from three (28th) and less than 40% overall.
  • WSU has yet to allow more than 70 points in regulation.  The Shockers have held six of their nine opponents under 60 -- something they did just four times all last year.
  • Etienne, the preseason AAC player of the year, is the team's top scorer at 15.6 points-per-game. He has 149 career threes heading into his 62nd game. If he connects against ASU he would be the fast Shocker to 150, breaking Landry Shamet's school record by seven games.
  • Dexter Dennis reached 150 threes on Saturday. His 151 triples are two shy of David Kyles for ninth on the all-time list and eight back of Shamet for eighth.
  • Udeze (10.9 ppg, team-high 5.9 rpg) has scored in double-figures in each of his last four contests and is averaging 15.8 points on 64.9% shooting over that span.
  • The Shockers are outscoring opponents by an average of 11.2 points-per-40-minutes with reserve forward Monzy Jackson on the floor. Porter (7.2), Council (7.1) and Dexter Dennis (6.4) have the next-highest totals.
  • WSU has won 13-straight at CKA, lasting losing Dec. 12, 2020 to Oklahoma State. The streak is tied for the 10th-longest in the building's 66 seasons.
  • Going back 10 years to the Fall of 2011, the Shockers are 63-3 in non-conference regular season games at CKA.
  • With Saturday's win, WSU is guaranteed a winning non-conference record for the 23rd consecutive season.
  • WSU is 5-0 this year when out-rebounding its opponent and 13-0 overall under Isaac Brown.

LAST GAME:
Dec. 11 at Charles Koch Arena | WSU 71, Norfolk St. 58

  • Etienne knocked down 4-of-9 from three.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between the schools.

SCOUTING ALCORN STATE:
  • Located in Lorman, Miss., Alcorn State (pronounced "ALL-corn") is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States (founded in 1871).
  • Alcorn State is picked seventh in the 12-team Southwestern Athletic Conference.
  • The Braves return three starters from a team that finished 6-13 (6-7 SWAC) in 2020-21 but second-year head coach Landon Bussie has transformed the roster via the transfew portal.
  • The Braves are off to a 1-7 start with their lone win coming at Milwaukee (61-57) on Nov. 28.
  • The Braves' schedule ranks as the nation's 11th-toughest per NCAA NET and only gets tougher. They will have faced three of last year's Final Four teams by the time the non-conference season ends. ASU lost at Gonzaga on Nov. 15 (84-57) and at Houston on Dec. 6 (77-45). A trip to defending national champion Baylor awaits on Dec. 20.
  • WSU is the third different AAC school that the Braves have faced. In addition to Houston, ASU also lost at Tulane (85-64) back on Dec. 4.
  • ASU plays four times in nine days, continuing at Tulsa (Dec. 16), Baylor (Dec. 20) and Oklahoma (Dec. 22).
  • The lineup is incredibly balanced. 6-foot-3 Vincennes (Ind.) transfer D.J. Brewton is the team's leading scorer at just 7.7 points but eight other regulars average between 4.4 and 7.1.
  • 6-9 grad transfer Lenell Henry won a pair of conference titles at Prairie View A&M and has made an impact in first year at Alcorn, averaging 7.1 points. He's the team's leading rebounder (6.9) and shot-blocker (1.1).
  • 6-7 junior Dontrell McQuarter averaged 9.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg last year at Rider and is putting up 7.1 and 4.8 this year.
  • 5-11 senior Justin Thomas (5.8 ppg) has been the team's primary ball-handler, averaging a team-best 3.6 assists and 2.0 steals. His 2.23 assist-to-turnover ratio tops the SWAC's individual leaderboard.
  • 5-10 second-time freshman Byron Joshua averages 6.8 points and 2.8 assists.
  • Keondre Montgomery appeared in seven games last year as a freshman at Mississippi State.
  • Last year as a high school senior, 6-2 guard Devin Carter was the state of Mississippi's leading scorer (30.9).
  • 6-3 junior combo guard Oddyst Walker (4.4 ppg) is in his second season at ASU after starting his career at Stephen F. Austin.
  • 6-6 junior forward LaDarius Marshall transferred to ASU last spring after stops at Southern Miss, Hinds Community College, and most-recently New Orleans.
  • 6-8 super senior Darrious Agnew played at Southeast Missouri State.

MATCHUP MASHUP:
  • This is the second of three December games against HBCU's. WSU faced Norfolk State on Dec. 11 and will welcome Prairie View A&M on Dec. 22.
  • WSU is 14-0 all-time against current members of the SWAC.

LAST MEETING WITH ALCORN STATE:
Nov. 30, 2009 in Wichita | WSU 87, Alcorn St. 52
  • WSU forced 19 first-half turnovers and 28 overall in a 35-point rout.
  • Aaron Ellis led a group of five double-figure scorers with 14 points and Garrett Stutz tallied a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. Toure' Murry added 13 points and four assists.
  • JaMarkus Holt led the Braves with 13 points.
  • The Shockers built up a 42-24 halftime lead and scored the first 10 points of the second half. They led by as many as 40 in the closing minutes.
  • WSU finished +16 in the turnover column and outscored the visitors 36-1 in points-off-turnovers.

TRENDING:
  • Saturday's win did wonders for the Shockers offensive numbers. Assists-per-game climbed from 11.1 to 11.9 and netted them 33 spots on the national list (300 to 267). Assists-to-turnover ratio moved from .76 to .86 and jumped them from 305 to 272. WSU is shooting above 40% for the first time all year (.401 up from .394) and now ranks 311th compared to 323rd heading into the weekend.
  • WSU has yet to allow more than 70 points in regulation. The closest so far has been Arizona – currently the nation's highest-scoring team at 90.7 points – which managed 69 points in 40 minutes before tacking on another 13 in the overtime period.
  • Offenses tend to look much better when the shots are falling. Two of the Shockers' best three-point shooters, Etienne and Dexter Dennis, struggled through the first month. Both were shooting 100+ points below their career averages coming into Saturday's game (Etienne, .286 and Dennis, .235). However, against Norfolk State, the pair combined to sink 6-of-14 (.429).
  • Saturday marked the first time that Qua Grant has failed to record a steal. He had tallied at least one in each of his first eight games as a Shocker. The West Texas A&M transfer has a team-high 13 for the year.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEAT IS:
  • WSU is 4-0 at CKA this year with wins over Jacksonville St., South Alabama, Tarleton St. and Norfolk St..
  • Those four foes combined to average just 56.0 points on 40.6% shooting. None scored more than 58.
  • The Shockers are shooting just 40.7% at CKA but have  been excellent at the foul line, outscoring opponents 56-34 on 81.2% accuracy (56-of-69).
  • The Shockers have also won the turnover battle in all four contests by an average of 4.5-per-game.
  • WSU has won its last 13 games at Charles Koch Arena, dating back to last December. The last defeat came Dec. 12, 2020 against Oklahoma State.
  • WSU has won 63 of its last 66 non-conference games at CKA going back to the Fall of 2011. Two of those losses came last December (Mizzou and OSU) when crowds were limited by COVID-19 restrictions. The other came against Louisiana Tech in the 2019-20 season opener.

A SHOCKER WIN WOULD….
... Improve their record to 8-2.
... Make them 8-2 or better at the 10-game mark for the 10th time in 13 season.
... Make them 2-0 all-time against Alcorn State.
... Make them 108-10 in non-conference regular season games at CKA since its 2003 renovation (.915).
... Extend their Roundhouse winning streak to 14 -- tied for the ninth-longest in the building's 66 seasons.
... Give Isaac Brown the best 32-game start in the program's modern history (24-8, .750).

A SHOCKERS LOSS WOULD...
... Drop them to 7-3.
... Be their first at the Roundhouse since Dec. 12, 2020 against Oklahoma State and end a 13-game win streak.
... Be just their 11th non-conference regular season loss at CKA since its 2003 renovation (107-11).
... Tie the all-time series with Alcorn State at 1-1.
... Be less good than a win.
