Shockers Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

2/6/2020 12:00:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – In partnership with the American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer, Wichita State men's basketball players will take the court in pink jerseys, shorts and shoes for their Thursday, Feb. 20 home game against the USF Bulls.

Thanks to increased awareness and improved screening and treatment options, breast cancer deaths have declined by 40 percent since 1991. However, the battle continues. In 2020, doctors will diagnose more than a quarter-million new breast cancer cases in the United States, and the disease will claim the lives of an estimated 42,690 women. In
Kansas alone, 2,390 new cases are expected this calendar year along with 350 breast cancer-related deaths.

WSU's Pink Game is an effort to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer. Shocker fans are encouraged to show their support by dressing the part. Limited edition pink t-shirts are available now for just $12 at Shocker Store locations inside the Rhatigan Student Center, Braeburn Square and Charles Koch Arena or online at ShockerStore.com.

In the days following the game, fans will have the opportunity to bid on game-worn pink uniforms and shorts, as well as a number of other special items, including autographed basketballs and Coach Gregg Marshall's own tie and shoes. Full Pink Auction details will be announced later this month.

Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society in support of breast cancer research and local programs and services for breast cancer survivors and their families.
