The Shockers open their home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Texas Southern.

Senior Preston Snavely, one of three Shocker starters who turned in strong effort in the season-opening series, gets you ready for the season. Snavely is a Spanish tutor, a four-season veteran and an excellent student who sees himself going to law school to prepare for a career in law enforcement.

He discusses the evolution of his beard, baseball superstitions and routines, how he's dealt with coaching changes at Wichita State, his plans for a career and his first start of the season.

On handling change:

"My whole high school career was changing coaches. I've been changing coaches, pretty much, my entire baseball career. My whole life has been, pretty much, moving. I'm a military kid and so I had to learn to adapt to different situations and environments. You never want your coach to leave or you never want changes. Some changes are for the best, and it's how you accept them."

On his first impressions of coach Eric Wedge:

"He can motivate anyone in a room. I don't think my dad had ever met Eric Wedge and he came to the First Pitch Banquet. My dad was ready to go fight for him. He just has that certain presence and that certain prowess that you want to fight for him, you want to be on his team."

On his career plans:

"I've been around that military, law-enforcement lifestyle my entire life. It's an every-day thing. It impacts people every day. You can either help someone or just stand by. Getting to the point where you help other people and finding that profession you can help other people with."

On his 11-strikeout performance last weekend:

"On Sunday, it was just me and (catcher) Ross (Cadena), me and Ross, me and Ross. There was no coaches relaying signs. I was able to throw a pitch, get back up on the mound and know exactly what I was going to do. It speeds up the game, for the good, and allows you to just not think."
