Wichita State Hits the Big Easy for Sunday Matchup

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State looks to avenge a home loss to Tulane earlier in league play when the Shockers travel to New Orleans on Sunday.

ON THE AIR
Sunday's game can be heard on the radio via KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his sixth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game will also be streamed online through TulaneGreenWave.com.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State had won its two previous games prior to Wednesday's loss vs. Memphis, dropping a 69-60 contest in Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State finished with a season-low five assists. Mariah McCully returned to the lineup after missing the previous three games to score a team-high 17 points, going 9-of-13 at the free throw line (both season highs). McCully also pulled down a season-high seven rebounds. Shyia Smith added 13 points and six rebounds on 6-of-8 shooting. Carla Bremaud tallied eight of her 10 points in the third quarter. Asia Henderson and Raven Prince both had a team-high tying seven rebounds.

SCOUTING THE GREEN WAVE
Tulane enters the matchup at 12-12 overall and 7-4 in league play. The Green Wave currently sit in fourth place in the league standings. Krystal Freeman leads Tulane in scoring (14.3), rebounding (7.8) and steals (42). Arsula Clark averages 11.9 points and has dished 56 assists this season.  Clark leads the conference in free throw attempts and ranks third in free throws made, but is shooting just 61.4 percent at the line. Mia Heide is one of the league's best shot blockers with 48 on the year. Her 48 swats and 2.09 per game rank second in The American. As a team, Tulane leads The American in three-point defense, allowing its opponents to shoot just 28.2 percent from beyond the arc. They rank second in blocked shots and third in field goal percentage defense.

THE SERIES VS. TULANE
Wichita State and Tulane have met five times prior to Sunday's matinee. The Shockers had won three straight before Tulane picked up a win over Wichita State in January. Wichita State is 2-0 vs. Tulane in New Orleans. The Shockers won by 18 last season in the lone matchup with the Green Wave in the Big Easy. Wichita State's average margin of victory in the two wins at Tulane is 13.0.

LAST MEETING
Wichita State dropped the first meeting with Tulane in 2020, a 61-56 road win for the Green Wave. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Wichita State in the series. Wichita State forced 26 Tulane turnovers, but allowed Tulane to shoot 41.3 percent from the field and 8-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Green Wave also outrebounded the Shockers 38-31, and held Wichita State to 33.9 percent from the floor. Mariah McCully was the lone Shocker to reach double figures, scoring a team-high 13 points despite shooting 5-of-17. McCully also added five boards and four steals. Seraphine Bastin added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.

ABOUT THE GREEN WAVE
Located in New Orleans, La., Tulane University has an enrollment of 13,449 as a member of the American Athletic Conference. Tulane returns nine letterwinners and four starters off last year's squad that finished 15-15 and 5-11 in The American. The Green Wave were picked to finish seventh by the league's coaches in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. Junior forward Krystal Freeman was a preseason First Team All-Conference selection after earning Most Improved Player and Second Team All-Conference honors a season ago. Head Coach Lisa Stockton is in her 26th season leading the Green Wave with a record of 520-285. She is among the top 50 winningest college women's basketball coaches of all time. Stockton has led the Green Wave to the postseason 18 times (11 NCAAs, 7 WNITs) and claimed conference Coach of the Year honors three times. Stockton is one of three active coaches to take a Top 50 academic institution as listed in U.S. and World Report to at least 11 NCAA Tournaments, joining Tara Vanderveer of Stanford and Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame.

SCHOOL RECORD GOES DOWN AT TEMPLE 
In Wichita State's 85-75 road win at Temple on Feb. 5, the Shockers knocked down a school record 15 three-pointers. The previous mark of 14 was set on Nov. 21, 1999 against Lamar. WSU also set season highs in 3FGA (27) and 3FG Pct. (55.6%) at Temple. Maya Brewer (5), Ashley Reid (5), DJ McCarty (3) and Shyia Smith (2) combined to make up the 15 treys.

BREWER TABBED FOR WEEKLY HONOR ROLL 
Senior guard Maya Brewer picked up her first career American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll selection Monday, Feb. 10. Brewer, a Kansas City, Mo., native scored 13 of her career-high 19 points in the second quarter of Wichita State's lone game last week - an 85-75 road win at Temple. She poured in 19 points in only 15 minutes off the bench behind a strong shooting performance. Brewer was 7-for-11 overall and a career-best 5-of-6 from three-point range. She contributed five of the team's school record 15 three-pointers. She has topped the 10-point mark seven times this season.

DISH IT OUT
Wichita State handed out a season-high 21 assists at Temple on Feb. 5. Sophomore Seraphine Bastin had a season-high eight and senior Ashley Reid added six. The 21 assists were the most since dishing out 26 vs. Temple in Feb. 2018.

OH MY MARIAH
Junior Mariah McCully has been on a  scoring tear recently for the Shockers. Over her last 15 games, McCully is averaging 14.7 points, including two 20-point outings. Her 16 games of 10 or more points this season rank first on the team and she is Wichita State's leading scorer on the year at 13.3 per game. The Shockers have three 20-point outings this season, two of which belong to McCully.

REBOUNDING IS THE KEY
When Wichita State wins the rebound battle, the outcome has been positive this season. The Shockers are 10-1 when winning the battle of the boards and 3-9 when they don't. In Wichita State's 13 wins this season, the Shockers are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 5.0 boards a game and grabbing 37.8 in those games. In the 11 losses, they average only 34.3 rebounds and are outrebounded by 5.6.

HENDERSON SETS CAREER HIGH 
Redshirt sophomore Asia Henderson scored nine of her career-high 11 points after halftime to help Wichita State secure a 57-55 win over ECU on Feb. 1. Henderson topped her previous career mark of 10 points set earlier this season. She also added four rebounds and a pair of blocks off the bench in 24 minutes of work.
