Wichita State to Host Memphis in Midweek Tilt

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State hosts Memphis on Wednesday in the only regular season meeting between the two programs.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State swept its regular season series with Temple following an 85-75 road win last Wednesday. Wichita State connected on a school record 15 three-pointers in the victory, while also setting season highs in three-point attempts (27), three-point percentage (55.6 percent) and assists (21). Maya Brewer hit a career-high five three-pointers on the way to a career-high 19 points. Ashley Reid also poured in a career-best five triples for 15 points and six assists. DJ McCarty added 14 points and Asia Henderson scored eight of her 10 in the third quarter. Seraphine Bastin nearly logged a triple-double with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis enters the matchup at 12-11 overall and 3-7 in league play. The Tigers own league wins over SMU, Tulsa and Tulane. Jamirah Shutes paces Memphis in scoring (15.2), assists (3.4) and steals (35). Dulcy Fankam-Mendjiadeu averages 11.4 points to go with a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game. Fankam-Mendjiadeu has eight double-doubles this season, which ranks second in the American Athletic Conference and top 50 nationally. Madison Griggs sits in the top three in the league in three-pointers made (2nd, 65), three-pointers attempted (3rd, 155) and three-point percentage (3rd, 41.9%). The Tigers shoot 42.1 percent from the field as a team, good for second in the conference. They also rank 2nd in free throws made and attempted.

THE SERIES VS. MEMPHIS
Wichita State and Memphis have met six times prior to Wednesday's matchup with the series all tied at three games apiece. The two teams will meet just once in 2020 with the Tigers making the trip to Wichita. Wichita State is 1-1 vs. Memphis in Wichita. The Tigers came into Charles Koch Arena last season and defeated the Shockers by 21 - the largest margin of victory for either team in the series.

LAST MEETING
Wichita State avenged a home loss to the Tigers with a road win at Memphis on Feb. 6, 2019, 57-48. The two teams split the regular season series a season ago with the road team winning each contest. Wichita State held the Tigers to 32.7 percent shooting overall, including a 3-for-21 mark from beyond the arc. On the offensive end for the Shockers, Wichita State hit 43.1 percent of its attempts despite converting only 6-of-21 from long range. Carla Bremaud led three Shockers in double figures with 13 points and three three-pointers. Seraphine Bastin added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Trajata Colbert chipped in 11 points. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

ABOUT THE TIGERS
Located in Memphis, Tenn., the University of Memphis has an enrollment of 22,044 as a member of the American Athletic Conference. Memphis returns five letterwinners and three starters off last year's squad that finished 11-20 and 5-11 in The American. The Tigers were picked to finish eighth by the league's coaches in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. All-Freshman Team selection Jamirah Shutes returns to lead the Tigers as a sophomore in 2020. Head Coach Melissa McFerrin is Memphis' third  winningest coach with a career record of 187-183, now in her 12th season with the Tigers. During her time at Memphis she has earned three victories over top-25 foes, most recently in 2017 against No. 20 USF. McFerrin has led Memphis to five WNIT appearances, including three straight from 2011-13. Prior to leading the Tigers' program, McFerrin spent her first four seasons as a head coach at American. McFerrin rebuilt the American women's basketball program and guided the Eagles to their first postseason berth in school history (2008 WNIT).

SCHOOL RECORD GOES DOWN AT TEMPLE 
In Wichita State's 85-75 road win at Temple on Feb. 5, the Shockers knocked down a school record 15 three-pointers. The previous mark of 14 was set on Nov. 21, 1999 against Lamar. WSU also set season highs in 3FGA (27) and 3FG Pct. (55.6%) at Temple. Maya Brewer (5), Ashley Reid (5), DJ McCarty (3) and Shyia Smith (2) combined to make up the 15 treys.

BREWER TABBED FOR WEEKLY HONOR ROLL 
Senior guard Maya Brewer picked up her first career American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll selection Monday, Feb. 10. Brewer, a Kansas City, Mo., native scored 13 of her career-high 19 points in the second quarter of Wichita State's lone game last week - an 85-75 road win at Temple. She poured in 19 points in only 15 minutes off the bench behind a strong shooting performance. Brewer was 7-for-11 overall and a career-best 5-of-6 from three-point range. She contributed five of the team's school record 15 three-pointers. She has topped the 10-point mark seven times this season.

DISH IT OUT
Wichita State handed out a season-high 21 assists at Temple on Feb. 5. Sophomore Seraphine Bastin had a season-high eight and senior Ashley Reid added six. The 21 assists were the most since dishing out 26 vs. Temple in Feb. 2018.

OH MY MARIAH
Junior Mariah McCully has been on a scoring tear recently for the Shockers. Over her last 14 games, McCully is averaging 14.6 points, including two 20-point outings. Her 15 games of 10 or more points this season rank first on the team and she is Wichita State's leading scorer on the year at 13.1 per game. The Shockers have three 20-point outings this season, two of which belong to McCully.

REBOUNDING IS THE KEY
When Wichita State wins the rebound battle, the outcome has been positive this season. The Shockers are 10-1 when winning the battle of the boards and 3-9 when they don't. In Wichita State's 13 wins this season, the Shockers are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 5.0 boards a game and grabbing 37.8 in those games. In the 10 losses, they average only 33.6 rebounds and are outrebounded by 6.2.

HENDERSON SETS CAREER HIGH 
Redshirt sophomore Asia Henderson scored nine of her career-high 11 points after halftime to help Wichita State secure a 57-55 win over ECU on Feb. 1. Henderson topped her previous career mark of 10 points set earlier this season. She also added four rebounds and a pair of blocks off the bench in 24 minutes of work.

Wichita State heads back out on the road to the Big Easy for a Sunday matinee at Tulane on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Tulane won the first meeting in Wichita back on Jan. 5.
