STRONG START
Wichita State junior forward
Asia Strong made a strong impression in her Shocker debut against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Nov. 27. The South Bend, Ind., native logged a game-high 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with six rebounds in her first Division I contest. She scored 11 of her 20 points in the first half to help the Shockers begin to pull away from a pesky A&M Corpus Christi squad. Strong followed that performance with a 16-point outing against Alcorn on Nov. 30. She scored 12 of her game-high 16 after halftime. She then notched her third straight game in double figures with 10 points vs. Southern on Dec. 4.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Northern Iowa is 1-2 to start to the 2020-21 campaign with a win over Creighton and losses to Iowa and North Dakota State. Kam Finley averages a team-high 14.0 points per game. She is one of four Panthers scoring 10-plus points a contest followed by Karli Rucker (11.3 ppg), Megan Maahs (10.7 ppg) and Emerson Green (10.3 ppg). Rucker leads UNI in assists with 11 and Cynthia Wolf defends the paint, blocking six shots this season - good for 18th nationally. As a team, UNI ranks top 25 nationally in three-pointers made (17th), three-pointers attempted (22nd) and blocked shots (19th). UNI sits in the top 50 in free throws made (48th) and attempted (44th).
THE SERIES VS. UNI
Wichita State and Northern Iowa have met 75 times dating all the way back to Jan. 6, 1984. The two programs played every year from 1984-2017, before WSU's move to The American. UNI has won the last five meetings. Sunday's matchup will be the 36th meeting in Wichita. The Shockers own a 19-16 mark against the Panthers when playing at home.
LAST MEETING
In the second game of the season, Wichita State dropped a 61-50 contest to Northern Iowa on Nov. 9, 2019.
Trajata Colbert scored a team-high 12 points and
Maya Brewer added 11. UNI's Karli Rucker finished with a game-high 18. The Panthers' top three scorers from the game all return for this season's matchup. Wichita State could never find a rhythm offensively. The Shockers shot just 30 percent overall, and were 1-for-12 from beyond the arc. At the free throw line, Wichita State didn't fare much better, going 13-for-24. UNI converted just 5-of-22 attempts from long range, but cashed in 18-of-20 tries from the free throw line to help offset 27 turnovers.
HOME OPENERS
Wichita State opened its home slate vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday, Nov. 27 for the 2020-21 season. The Shockers are 30-17 all-time in home openers after defeating the Islanders, 78-58.
