CINCINNATI – Cincinnati outrebounded Wichita State by 15 and only committed six turnovers to defeat Wichita State, 82-54, Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
Wichita State (10-13, 3-7) also allowed the Bearcats to shoot 53 percent from the field, despite only taking 11 three-pointers and making three. Cincinnati was able to convert at the charity stripe, hitting 17-of-25.
Cincinnati (15-8, 7-3) won the battle of the boards, 41-26, and dished out 19 assists on its 31 made field goals.
Trajata Colbert collected her second straight game in double-digits with a team-high 11 points.
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage registered her ninth double-figure outing with 10 points, scoring six in the first quarter.
Antoinette Miller scored a game-high 23 points to lead five Bearcat scorers in double-figures.
Lozada-Cabbage outscored Cincinnati 6-4 over the first 5:35 to begin the game, while the defense limited the Bearcats to just 2-of-8 from the field. Players not named Lozada-Cabbage combined to shoot just 2-of-7 in the opening quarter.
Cincinnati would use a 12-2 run to take a 16-9 lead with less than a minute to go before a
Trajata Colbert layup made it 16-11 after 10 minutes of play.
WSU would shoot 42 percent thanks to Lozada-Cabbage going 3-of-5, while Cincy hit six of its 15 attempts in the period.
The Bearcats then scored the first nine points of the second quarter to open a 25-11 lead, forcing a
Keitha Adams timeout with 7:43 to go in the half. Antoinette Miller was responsible for 14 of Cincy's first 25 points.
A
Jaida Hampton three-pointer with 5:15 left would be the Shockers' first points of the quarter and also snap Cincinnati's run at 13-0.
Maya Brewer completed an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to 33-20 at the 2:11 mark and a
Carla Bremaud putback with just 3.0 seconds left made it 35-22 at the break.
Lozada-Cabbage scored all six of her team-high points in the first few minutes of the first quarter. For the half, WSU shot 35 percent compared to Cincinnati's 48 percent. The Bearcats also outrebounded the Shockers 19-11 over the first 20 minutes.
Miller led all scorers with 16 points to help Cincy push its lead to double-digits.
Following a Bremaud trey and
Cesaria Ambrosio layup Wichita State brought the deficit back to single digits with 7:15 remaining in the third. Just three minutes later Bremaud's second three-pointer cut it to 42-35.
Cincinnati went more than five minutes without a field goal and finished the frame just 4-of-14 from the field, but was able to build its lead back up at the free throw line. The Bearcats hit 11-of-15 free throws in the third quarter to take a 54-39 lead into the fourth.
A momentum-changing call in the final seconds of the third gave Cincy a 15-point cushion when it could have been only 11.
Seraphine Bastin drove in and scored for what looked like a three-point play, but was instead called for an offensive foul, which led to a
Keitha Adams technical foul. Cincinnati hit 1-of-2 free throws and never looked back from there.
The Bearcats carried that momentum into the final period where they scored the first six points and 12 of the first 16 to lead 66-43 and 6:52 to go.
Wichita State would trail by as many as 30 in the final frame to end the Shockers' road win streak at two games.
