Another Road Test Awaits Shockers at Creighton

12/12/2019 3:00:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State and Creighton have met every year since 1993 and that series continues Saturday afternoon when the Shockers travel to Omaha to face the Bluejays at 1 p.m.

ON THE AIR
Saturday's game can be heard on the radio at KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his sixth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game can also be seen at GoCreighton.com.

600
Wichita State won its 600th game all time with its 88- 83 win over Oklahoma on Nov. 30, 2019. They became the 10th program in the American Athletic Conference with 600 or more victories. UCF (597) is right on the doorstep to 600 as well - needing only five wins to reach the milestone. Tulsa (351) is the only other active member shy of that mark.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State returned to the win column on Saturday with a 63-52 win over Eastern Michigan. For the sixth time this season Wichita State recorded double digit steals (10). Junior Mariah McCully scored a career-high 25 points on 8-of-18 shooting to go with three steals. McCully's 25 points were the most by a Shocker since Rangie Bessard scored 25 vs. Tulane on Feb. 24, 2018. Sophomore Seraphine Bastin added 12 points to go with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. Bastin has pulled down five or more rebounds in every game but one this season. Sophomore Shyia Smith blocked a career-high three shots.

SCOUTING THE BLUEJAYS
Creighton is off to a 7-2 start in 2019-20 with wins over Omaha, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Nebraska, West Virginia, Temple and Northern Iowa. The Bluejays are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches Poll. Andover, Kan., native Jaylyn Agnew leads four Bluejays in double figures at 18.7 points per game to go with 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Agnew ranks ninth and 14th nationally in minutes per game and three-pointers attempted. Temi Carda (11.8), Tatum Rembao (10.3) and Olivia Elger (10.0) round out the top scorers. Rembao lead Creighton in assists (28) and steals (13). The Bluejays are one of the best in the country in taking care of the ball. They only average 9.9 turnovers a game, which leads the nation. Creighton also ranks in the top 25 nationally in assist-turnover ratio (12th), 3-pointers per game (19th) and 3-point attempts (22nd).

BUCKETS FOR BREMAUD
A season ago, Carla Bremaud led the Shockers in scoring and was selected for the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team, becoming the first freshman to lead Wichita State in scoring for a season since Kiki Stephens in 2004-05. Now a sophomore, Bremaud will look to carry that momentum into 2019-20, while also coming off a summer with the French U20 National Team.

A SHOCKER WIN WOULD...
... make them 6-3 on the season
... make them 26-35 all-time vs. Creighton
... snap a two-game skid against the Bluejays
... be their first win at Creighton since 2001
... run Adams' career coaching record to 443-284
... make Adams 316-247 at the Division I level
... make Wichita State 602-686 all-time

A SHOCKER LOSS WOULD...
... drop them to 5-4 to begin the season
... drop them to 25-36 all-time vs. Creighton
... make them 6-21 all-time in Omaha
... give the Bluejays three straight wins in the series
... lower Adams' career coaching record to 442-285
... make Adams 315-248 at the Division I level
... make Wichita State 601-687 all-time

BIG WEEK LANDS MCCULLY ON HONOR ROLL
Mariah McCully picked up her first career weekly honor after scoring a career-high 25 points vs. Eastern Michigan on Dec. 7. McCully, a Grand Rapids, Mich. native, averaged 19.0 points, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals on 43.8 percent shooting in Wichita State's two games during the week. She opened the week with a then-career high 13 points against No. 18 Missouri State, and finished in a big way. She poured in a career-best 25 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while adding a career-high three steals in the win over EMU.

MAKE IT RAIN
Wichita State poured in 12 three-pointers in only 22 attempts in its victory over Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 30. The 12 made three-pointers are the most in a single game since Dec. 30, 2006, when the Shockers made 12-of-24 against Evansville. The school record for made triples in a single game is 14, which was set in 1999. Wichita State has made 10 or more three-pointers only four times between 2006 and Nov. 30, 2019.

OU LEFTOVERS
Wichita State's win over Oklahoma on Nov. 30 was the program's first win against a Big 12 opponent and Power 5 member since Dec. 12, 2014, when the Shockers defeated in-state rival, Kansas State, 51-48 in Charles Koch Arena. That same season Wichita State also recorded wins against Clemson (ACC) and Ohio State (Big Ten).

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN(S)
The votes are in. Wichita State women's basketball will feature three team captains in 2019-20 - senior Ashley Reid and sophomores Seraphine Bastin and Trajata Colbert. Selected by their teammates, the trio will be looked upon to lead the Shocker basketball program for the remainder of the campaign.

THE SERIES VS. CREIGHTON
Wichita State and Creighton have met on the hardwood every year dating back to 1993 despite the two teams being in different conferences starting in 2014. The Bluejays hold a 35-25 advantage in the all time series, and have won every matchup against the Shockers at home since 2001. Wichita State's last win in Omaha came on Jan. 1, 2001 by score of 89-75.

LAST MEETING
Creighton came into Wichita last season on Dec. 8, 2018 and left with an 83-71 win. Wichita State connected on 48.3 percent of its field goal attempts, won the rebound battle and only committed 13 turnovers, but it wasn't enough to offset the 18 three-pointers Creighton knocked down. The Bluejays finished 18-for-41 from beyond the arc. Shyia Smith scored a career-high 17 points to lead four Shockers in double figures. Alyssia Faye added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage and Carla Bremaud both scored 11 points.

ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS
Located in Omaha, Neb., Creighton University has an enrollment of 8,821 as a member of the BIG EAST Conference. Creighton returns nine letterwinners and three starters off last year's squad that finished 15-16 and 8-10 in the BIG EAST. Creighton was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior Jaylyn Agnew was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after posting 10.4 points and 7.1 rebounds as a junior. Head Coach Jim Flanery is in his 18th season leading the Bluejays and has a career record of 334-223 through his first 17-plus seasons. The school's all-time wins leader is the only women's basketball coach to guide Creighton to four NCAA Tournaments. Flanery has led the Bluejays to nine 20-win seasons and reached the postseason 14 times, including a stretch of 11 consecutive years from (2008-2018). Creighton has also made two appearances in the WNIT Final Four (2003 & 2004) under Flanery, capturing the 2004 WNIT championship.

UP NEXT
Wichita State has a quick turnaround after the matchup with Creighton. The Shockers host Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday, Dec. 14 at 11:30 a.m. for the annual Schoolhouse Rocks with the Shocks Kids Game.
