Wichita State unofficially kicks off the 2019-20 season with an exhibition tune-up vs. Missouri Southern State tonight at 6:30 p.m.
ON THE AIRÂ
Monday night's game can be heard online at GoShockers.com/Listen with Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his sixth year as the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball.
CHASING 600
Wichita State enters the 2019-20 campaign with an all-time record of 596-683, needing just four wins to reach 600. They would become the 10th program in the American Athletic Conference with 600 or more victories. UCF (594) is right on the doorstep to 600 as well - needing only six wins to reach the milestone. Tulsa (349) is the only other active member shy of that mark.
EXHIBITIONS
Wichita State and Missouri Southern State squared off one year ago in a tune-up before the season-opener. The Shockers defeated the Lions by a score of 62-49. The Wichita State defense held Missouri Southern to 29.4 percent shooting, including a 3-of-26 mark from beyond the arc. Both teams had trouble taking care of the basketball, as the two combined to commit 46 turnovers. WSU outrebounded MSSU by 14 to offset the turnover issues.
Carla Bremaud scored a game-high tying 13 points and
Seraphine Bastin added 11 points in their first action sporting the Black & Yellow.
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Under third-year head coach
Keitha Adams, Wichita State is 3-0 in exhibition matchups.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Missouri Southern State comes to Charles Koch Arena for the second straight season to play an exhibition contest. The Lions finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 14-16 record and 6-13 mark in the MIAA. Senior Chasidee Owens returns after averaging 11.5 points and a team-best 5.9 rebounds per game. Senior Destiny Cozart will lead the backcourt after posting 9.1 points and leading the team in assists (46) and steals (38). MSSU lost Chelsey Henry to graduation after posting a team-high 15.8 points per game last season. Missouri Southern is led by fourth-year head coach Ronnie Ressel. Ressel is 37-50 in his first three seasons. Ressel is entering his 17th season as part of the athletic department at Missouri Southern, serving as an assistant with both the men's and women's programs. A 1992 graduate of Missouri Southern, he returned to his alma mater for the 2002-03 campaign after spending ten years at Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill.
BUCKETS FOR BREMAUD
A season ago,
Carla Bremaud led the Shockers in scoring and was selected for the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team, becoming the first freshman to lead Wichita State in scoring for a season since Kiki Stephens in 2004-05. Now a sophomore, Bremaud will look to carry that momentum into 2019-20, while also coming off a summer with the French U20 National Team.
UP NEXT
Wichita State officially takes the court for game one in 2019-20 on Saturday, Nov. 9 vs. former Missouri Valley Conference rival, Northern Iowa. The Shockers and Panthers will tip at 5 p.m. following the WSU men's game vs. Texas Southern.
