Shockers Seek First Road Win at Louisiana Tech

11/19/2019 9:00:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State travels to Ruston, La., to face the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters Wednesday night for a 6:30 p.m. tip in the Thomas Assembly Center.

ON THE AIR
Wednesday's game can be heard on the radio at KFH 97.5 FM/1240 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain is in his sixth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game will also be streamed online at ConferenceUSA.com/watch ($$).

CHASING 600
Wichita State enters the 2019-20 campaign with an all-time record of 597-685, needing just three wins to reach 600. They would become the 10th program in the American Athletic Conference with 600 or more victories. UCF (596) is right on the doorstep to 600 as well - needing only six wins to reach the milestone. Tulsa (350) is the only other active member shy of that mark.

LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State recorded its first win of 2019-20 with a 69-63 victory over Southern, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Shockers are now 1-0 all-time vs. the Jaguars. Wichita State set season highs in field goal percentage (52.2), free throw percentage (90.0), assists (13) and also forcing 26 turnovers - the second most this season. Junior Mariah McCully made her Shocker debut and finished with a game-high 12 points. McCully also collected three boards, three assists and four steals. Raven Prince and Asia Henderson each added 10 points. Prince scored all 10 before halftime, including her first career three-pointer. Henderson's double-digit outing was the first of her career.

SCOUTING THE LADY TECHSTERS
Louisiana Tech is 2-0 to open the season after wins against LSU-Alexandria (93-61) and Memphis (83-74). The Lady Techsters have four players averaging 10 or more points through their first two games, led by Grayson Bright at 18.0 per game. Bright also ranks second on the team in rebounding at 9.5 and is shooting 59.1 percent from the field. Keiunna Walker (14.0 ppg), Lotte Sant (11.0 ppg) and Amber Hawkison (11.0 ppg) round out the leading scorers. Sant has connected on 66.7 percent of her three-point attempts this season, which ranks 21st nationally. Anna Larr Roberson nearly posts a double-double with 8.0 points and a team-best 10.0 rebounds per game. Louisiana Tech ranks in the top 20 nationally in steals per game (9th) and scoring (12th).

BUCKETS FOR BREMAUD
A season ago, Carla Bremaud led the Shockers in scoring and was selected for the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team, becoming the first freshman to lead Wichita State in scoring for a season since Kiki Stephens in 2004-05. Now a sophomore, Bremaud will look to carry that momentum into 2019-20, while also coming off a summer with the French U20 National Team.

A SHOCKER WIN WOULD...
... make them 2-2 on the season
... give them a 2-0 lead in the series vs. Louisiana Tech
... run Adams' career coaching record to 439-283
... make Adams 312-246 at the Division I level
... make Wichita State 598-685 all-time

A SHOCKER LOSS WOULD...
... drop them to 1-3 to begin the season
... drop WSU to 1-1 vs. Louisiana Tech
... lower Adams' career coaching record to 437-285
... make Adams 310-248 at the Division I level
... make Wichita State 596-687 all-time

HEY DJ, GO DJ
Playing in her first collegiate road contest on Monday, Nov. 11 at Oral Roberts, freshman guard DJ McCarty set a number of season highs. McCarty came in off the bench and lit up the Golden Eagles to the tune of 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in 33 minutes of action. The Texas native also pulled down four rebounds. McCarty and Carla Bremaud single-handedly kep the Shockers in it the first half, combining for 17 of the team's 25 points.

MCCULLY SHINES IN DEBUT
Junior guard Mariah McCully made her long-awaited Wichita State debut on Sunday, Nov. 17 vs. Southern, and she did not disappoint. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native came off the bench to score a game-high 12 points in 22 minutes of action, while shooting 5-of-10 from the floor. McCully did a little bit of everything, totaling three rebounds, three assists and four steals to help the Shockers record their first win of the season.

WIN NO. 300
Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams collected her 300th career win at the Division I level in Wichita State's overtime win vs. Missouri State on Nov. 10, 2018. She compiled 284 wins in her 16 seasons at UTEP and has accumulated 27 in her first two plus seasons at Wichita State. She has a career record of 311-246.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN(S)
The votes are in. Wichita State women's basketball will feature three team captains in 2019-20 - senior Ashley Reid and sophomores Seraphine Bastin and Trajata Colbert. Selected by their teammates, the trio will be looked upon to lead the Shocker basketball program for the remainder of the campaign.

THE SERIES VS. LOUISIANA TECH
Wichita State and Louisiana Tech have met just once prior to Wednesday's matchup. The two schools squared off one year ago in Charles Koch Arena, a Wichita State win, 70-56. This will be the first meeting between Wichita State and Louisiana Tech in Ruston.

LAST MEETING
Wichita State and Louisiana Tech met nearly one year ago in Wichita on Nov. 24, 2018 - a game the Shockers led wire-to-wire. Wichita State led by as many as 18 in the game thanks to holding La Tech to 4-of-24 from beyond the arc and outrebounding the Lady Techsters by 10. WSU hit 50.8 percent of its field goals despite shooting 4-of-17 from long range. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage dominated with a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds to go with five assists and two steals. Three other Shockers finished in double-figures led by Raven Prince with 14, Dawnyel Lair's 12 and Carla Bremaud with 11.

ABOUT THE LADY TECHSTERS
Located in Ruston, La., Louisiana Tech University has an enrollment of 11,957 as a member of the Conference USA. Louisiana Tech returns seven letterwinners and three starters off last year's squad that finished 14-16 and 6-10 in the C-USA. Louisiana Tech was picked to finish ninth in the 2019-20 C-USA Preseason Poll. La Tech must replace the nation's fourth leading scorer from a season ago in Kierra Anthony (23.4 ppg). Raizel Guinto is the top returning bucket getter at 7.8 points. Grayson Bright is back after leading the team in rebounds (6.8 rpg) to go with 7.7 ppg. Co-Head Coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr are in their fourth season leading the Techsters and have compiled a 53-42 record. Brooke Stoehr was a former player at La Tech under Hall of Fame head coach Leon Barmore. Stoehr came back to her alma mater after four successful years at Northwestern State, where she guided the Lady Demons to three postseason tournaments, including a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Scott Stoehr makes up the second half of the La Tech co-head coaching duo joining his wife on the sideline. Stoehr was instrumental in La Tech posting back-to-back winning campaigns in his first two years back in Ruston in 2016-17 and 2017-18. After being picked to finish 12th in the C-USA preseason coaches' poll in 2016-17, Stoehr helped guide the La Tech to 18 wins, a 4th-place finish in the regular season standings and the program's first national postseason berth since 2011.
